Clutch question please assist o wise ones...
« on: July 16, 2014, 04:57:55 AM »
Rebuilding a K1 and have two clutch baskets. One is a bit thicker than the other and has the double plate in the centre. The last clutch plate that goes on top is different with wider tabs on it and also different pattern on the plate. Maybe it's a ring in?
When I got the bike it had the thinner basket with circlips spacing it out. The thicker basket came from a K0 (so I'm told).
Want to buy new friction plates but all the kit are 7 plates that are the same?
Also the basket that holds the plates that goes on first is very tight on the spline. Is it normal to heat this when installing?

Confused?

The thicker basket, with the double plate in the center, is from a later model (K7/K8/F2/F3). They do indeed have one plate that is different than the other six. Also, the stack ends up being about 1/4" taller and will require some clearancing on the inside of the early model clutch cover to prevent interference. I found this out when I used an early model clutch cover on my K8 (it was shiney!) but when bolted in place the clutch wouldn't budge. Requires removal of some material on the inside of the early model cover in a couple of spots.

Where does the thickness change between models?  Is it the shaft or housing. My crankcase is definitely K1 but the basket that came with it was the thinner type but had spacers behind the basket to bring it forward?
