Titling my cb550 in Indiana without a title
« on: July 15, 2014, 03:28:39 PM »
Hi all, my uncle just gifted me a 77 cb550 that he had gotten from his father in law when he passed. The only negative is that the title is no where to be found and the original owner has passed. It hasn't been registered since 2005 and I would like to make it road worthy. Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!

Go ask at your county clerks office they will tell you how to go about it. Otherwise wait till this weekend and I'll find the state form numbers and process for you. I do tech support for the local county government.

Hi guys, I finally got to visit the Clerk's office.  You will need to go to small claims court to get a title in Indiana. It's about 80 bucks for this part of the procedure. Bring at least 2 copies pf all supporting documentation. Things like VIN check, bill of sale, and perhaps in your case title search and or death certificate.
You will be the Plaintiff and the BMV will be listed as the defendant.. The judge will issue a court order compelling the BMV to issue a new title for you.
You will still need to send paperwork to the Indy Title Processing unit of the BMV. This will include.
Certificate of Title  completed and signed. State Form :44049
Court Order
VIN Check State Form : 39530
Odometer statement State Form : 43230
Proof of Residency : Drivers License, ID card, Utility bill from last 60 days, or a W2.
15 dollar title application fee.
Sales Tax in the case based on NADA price. Sales tax is 7% total value.

I hope this helps

Not in Indiana. I talked with the gals in the clerks office and these happen all the time and there's usually no issue with it.

It doesn't seem so bad to me, but it's better than not getting a title.
Do VIN check.
Go to small claims explain situation.
Send money and paperwork to BMV
Get title.
Seems easy.
