Helloooooooo CB550 in grand ol' Vermont!!
« on: July 15, 2014, 07:37:16 PM »
Hello guys, I'm a new owner of a 1976 CB550K that was given grac to me by my awesome dad. I had been wanting to get a bike for a while, and he gave me his as long as I would work on it (needed a new head-gasket) and help fix up  another cb550 thats been sitting in the garage for a few years. This bike was in excellent condition, but sadly my days of roaming the open road going wherever the curves brought me have been put on halt. Currently I am taking apart the bike and fixing it up after I ran into some massive potholes (barely a half mile from my house) and dumped it into a ditch, and got banged up myself. Twisted the forks, and most of the front end needs to be replaced as well as the gas tank. I love this bike and cannot wait to get it back on the road. My dad said I should check out this site because everyone here was very helpful, and he was always getting laughs out of it. So here I am. This whole restoration project has been a lot of fun for me as I had never rebuilt an engine before, and I'm learning a lot and I hope that I can get some good advice on here as there are definitely some experts on here (I've been here quite a lot recently with this rebuild). I'm hoping that this is  the beginning of a very long time being involved with motorcycles.

Eric

Hello and welcome! Drats about the roads and ditches. Happens to all sorts, even Yankees  ;)

So, first things first, grab a good manual. If you don't have one, they can be downloaded from here. When replacing/rebuilding your front end, upgrade the steering head bearings to tapered bearings, company is All Ballz. It's a nice improvement over the stock ball bearings and race.

Do check the triple tree carefully for cracks. These are widely available and are easy to replace. Might want to replace the wheel bearings too while you have the front end off, and double-check the spokes for true.

Post up a pic of the tank, perhaps can help you get the straightened out without painting or Bondo. There's a For Sale section on hush ss forum and you can often find guys parting out bikes, extra stock parts from customs, etc. So parts galore for your rebuilding pleasure. If you need something, there's a section for that too where you can post up a "I need a.."  Someone always has it.

This a build thread by a member here doing a nut and bolt, factory grade restoration. Better than a manual in some respects. Take a few and read it. It happens to be your model as well. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=86697.0

Good luck on getting the bike and your body back together and riding soon!

Btw, where in VT? Wife is from Hancock-

Hey guys, sorry I took forever to get back to you all, I've been real busy with work and all my free time goes right into my bike. I just got done putting on the new front end that I salvaged from another cb550 that was sitting in my dads garage. Ill post some pictures once I get done for the night. Cal thanks for the advice, alsmot everything you touched upon has been taken care of excepting the gas tank. I've been struggling to find a decent replacement, or anyone that offers to restore old gas tanks. pics to follow.

Where in VT, V? That tank can be fixed, but the dent in the left front is going to cause some paint damage. Getting the dents out is easy enough, but saving that paint, well scarred for life I'm afraid.

You can often find decent tanks for sale here in the For Sale section of the Forum, or guys parting out their bikes. If you want the dents removed, locate a good Paintless Dent service nearby (may be called Dent Wizards). If you can't, send it down to me, I'll get that knocked out for you. On your own for the painting though...
