well... i just traveled 1320 round trip miles to pick up my new project! i got a 1978 cb750. the back tire is off the bike, needs tube replacement. has a BIG front fairing on it with no wind shield attached but it has a brand new one in the box. and it is for sale. needs paint and a bolt or spacer or washer or two for the back wheel but other than that it seems ok. i did not here it run and it sat for about a year. the front brake sticks a little too. it looks like a little oil leaks from the right hand side of the bike at a big nut on the case. (can some one tell me if that is a normal prob?) and there is a little oil residue around the top of the cylinder by the top. is that a  normal problem? did i mention that i willinglly handed $450.00 of my hard earned cash for this pile?

what have i done? if some one would...please that was a real question.

Don't worry, man!  I have that same feeling everytime I get a new project bike, but it always works out fine.

well for the top of the case, if it is on the right side, it is the tach seal. No big deal. Front brake will need cleaning, really good faq on that and pretty simple too. The leak on the side is also probably just a simple seal as well. Give the bike a good cleaning and change oil and clean front brake and change fluid. Then do a good inspection.

  Don,

I have both the dohc and the sohc and you will love the sohc so much more. Both are so different but both good bikin' fun
I am currently restoring a sohc K8 that has not run since it was wrecked on June 24, 1996! Talk about overwhelming haha.
One of my favorite things to do is work late on the machine, drinking coffee and Coast to Coast AM radio program to listen to whilst applying bandages.
I dream of the day when the carbs will again flow and the motor will again live.

Until then just sitting on the machine making motor sounds.

Life is good. And you did good too.  Bob in Colorado

The 78 is much easier than the 1979 for sure, to work on. I sold my 79 but kept the 74,75 and 1978's because , well just because. Have fun. ;D

Glad to see you got it back okay. Did you pick up those Vision bars before you went back?

A nut.... Sounds kind of like an oil seal. Is it to or bottom? If it's bottom there's an oil gallery plug you may have to tighten, or at the very most put a new o-ring on.

I am getting ready to drop the seized motor out of my parts scrambler. It's front end parts went to another bike, so only guages and wires hanging. I was reaching from the front with a wrench in each hand to back up the bolt on the motor mount I was loosening up, and realized that it was almost like I was hugging it.   From there it's going to take a lot of love, but at least I have one like it to ride so I know what I will get out of it.

Good luck,   and lots of love in return. $450 is nothing if you have the time.

And BTW, most people here seem to dump the farings, but that's your call.

The fairing is in the shed and there isn't enough room in the dump trailer so it gets yet another reprieve.

Give stevo the Golden Shovel for exhuming this here thread.

Dunno if I'd even want to swap my kickstarter for another camshaft? hmmmm. The extra cam wouldn't seem like much of a bonus if I just got ripped off for my kicker.

Ah, that makes sense.  You managed to bring up a post that was sitting on the very first page (chronologically) of the Open forum.  Good work!! ;D
