Stainless bolts strong enough?
« on: July 18, 2014, 11:42:03 am »
I have the cases of my CB550 split, and it won't be long before I'll put it back together. I have bought a SS kit for the top end/covets, but would like to replace the cases/engine bolts as well.

Will regular SS bolts be strong enough or are the Honda bolts made of extra strong Hondanium?

I read not to use copper anti-seize - anything else I should be mindful of?

Stainless is differing grades of steel. And not all stainless is as strong as the factory bolts. I too replaced all case bolts with stainless, but, I used ARP stainless bolts. They are very strong and have tensile strength of up to 180,000 psi. You can get them in a flange head which will be similar to the factory style fastener.

There's one extra long 8MM bolt that is unobtanium and you'll either have to re-use the stock bolt, or make one. I made one from 303 stainless and used an ARP nut welded on to provide the strength for the head.

They get tightened barely more than finger tight so it really doesn't matter. You will very easily strip threads before you get near breakage torque.

He's talking about the case bolts, not the side covers. Case bolts see much higher torque. But not more than 303 Stainless provides anyway.

For any none standard fasteners find a supplier that deals with Spaenaur. Won't be cheap but they have stuff that you've never imagined even existed. Aluminum, titanium, stainless etc etc. I'd be very suprised if they couldn't supply your long 8mm bolts in stainless.

I did actually try them. They, like everyone else, seems to stop at 100mm length. The bolt in question is like 155mm. No matter now, I made one.

Ok, I'm impressed.  Good thinking.
