Installing cb550 valve cover, tappet question
« on: July 27, 2014, 05:30:12 PM »
Trying to get this valve cover put on and sweating bullets bc I don't want to f this up.

I've read multiple posts about it but can't find the answer to my question

Will any of the tappets be tight against the valve stem when reinstalling the valve cover,  I've got them rubber banded up.

There will be 6 tappets with lots of play, 1 with a tiny bit and the other will be right against the valve stem.  I figured this was just bc of how the lobes on the can were setting when installing the cover

Some valves will be open when you finally get the cover in place. The important part is that you ensure the tappet screw is on the top of those valves as you tighten it down. If you let the screw slip beside the valve stem, that's when you'll bend the valve. Easy does it, tighten it down progressively and evenly & all will be good. Keep your eyes open every step of the way.

don't put much pressure on those four front screws on those little lugs they'll snap off!,pull the main part of any tension down with the other bolts and only square up those front ones as you go,once the cover is down fully then tighten them finally.
