500/550 seat pan types
« on: July 23, 2014, 07:17:11 AM »
How many types of seats/seat pans are there for 500/550 fours & how can you tell them apart?

I have a 1974 CB550, for which I purchased a replacement seat which does not fit. I want to sell the seat on ebay, but I need to know what year/models it will fit. The seat pan has a large X shape stamped in it, visible from the bottom

It's a new, high quality aftermarket seat, but sadly it doesn't fit my bike. I bought it several years ago from Advanced Cycle Products: the receipt says the seat is for Honda CB500K CB500 Four K1 K2

I can't find enough parts manuals to get a handle on this & would appreciate any help

Thanx, Steve

if it not fits the tank..it must be for a late"r".they have a bigger tank...is the seat lock fitting fine???..the last 550 1978 have a 2 step seat...so think that yours are a 1977 seat..but most of this late bike are k3..so are not 100% on it....
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

I have 2 gas tanks, one stock from my 1974 CB550 & one from an earlier CB500 (I don't know the year)

My stock 1974 CB550 seat works with both, but the replacement seat does not, tho I was able to mount it & close it on the lock properly without the tank being installed. The seat was advertised as being for a CB 500K. The receipt reads "Honda CB 500K CB500 Fpur K1 k2 Four - New Seat"

There pan has a large X stamped in it as can be seen in the photo (with the cat). My original seat lacks the X

Thanx, Steve

theres two seat types, what tank are you using on your 500?does it have a lockable tin flap over the filler?if so that's a later 550 tank and youll need the later seat to use with it.

the 550 tank has a lockable filler & the other does not. both appear to be the same shape, my stock CB550 seat works with both, the replacement seat works with neither

how doesent it fit?what fouls up?the 550 seat with 500 tank will leave a gap between them,so it will "work"but be "wrong"

the seat will not close down over the tank

the side profile of the replacement seat appears higher as can be seen in the photos, most obviously in the piping along the side

you need the 550 seat, the 500 seat will fit if you use the 500 tank, they foul otherwise, advertise yours as fit 500s and first gen 550s with chrome cap and latch type tank.
