CB 550 motor question
« on: July 22, 2014, 04:31:06 PM »
Are there any differences in the yrs of the CB 550 motors ?? Can you interchange parts, or completely swap out motors ?? I have a 78 550k and have a friend that has a cheap 74 lump, and just want to know if its worth the $175 for the parts ??

Wanting to build up a motor to "swap in". Call me nuts, but I don't want to do anything to the Stocker... Would rather source a lump and do the mods to it..

That's a great idea. Some performance mods I'm about to do another new build:

550 lower end, bored to 572
HD studs
650 head - Stage 2 MRieck job, 650 cam
Stock carbs fully built up and stock airbox

Should be a nice performance upgrade and still very street-able.

WoW, LQQk'n at kinda the same deal.. I sourced a 79 CB 650 for the motor a few wks back, and now looking for a lump 550 to do the swap over the winter....

I was leaning that way, but the motor that I sourced wasn't fully complete, the lower part of the motor had a bunch of broken fins from the PO. :( .... and after seeing the 2 diff motors, I prefer the looks of the intake from my 550....

I got the 2 parts that I was looking for (Cam & Oil Pan) plus all the internals, bolts/hardwear etc... for the Price of a used Cam, and I got the experience of tearing into a motor...

Just wondering what other parts can I save for a rainy day ?? Will the CB 650 oil pump, starter, crank, coils, stator etc.. work on my 550?
