76 CB750F clutch part question. Did I cause this?
« on: July 25, 2014, 06:48:24 PM »

Other side:

The grove is where one of the steel plates is at.

Bike sits around a lot in a hot humid garage, the clutch sticks and will not release when clutch is pulled in.

Break it loose, all is good.

Prior to finding this site, method used was to stick it in gear when running to break it loose.

Since finding this site, method was to pull clutch in and use kickstart to break it loose. Also warmed bike up with clutch lever pulled in.

3 weeks ago, clutch was stuck real bad, took a while to get it to release. Then heard scraping noise when pulling out from dead stop. No noise heard while riding, shifted OK.

Disassembled clutch, inspected, found this. Also cleaned clutch plates (still rust pitted) and friction disks with brake cleaner and scotchbrite pad. Soaked friction disks in oil overnight, reassembled, noise now gone, and bike shifted as it as always done. Oil was changed earlier this year (15-40 rotella). Sadly, only driven 5 miles since oil change.

Have new clutch center, just ordered new friction disks, plates, springs and a few other things for clutch repair.

The questions are:

Did I cause this ?

Is this the reason for the clutch sticking?

(I believe the root of the clutch sticking is from sitting in the garage. My truck is a 5 speed and i have trouble with getting it in gear, grabby clutch, and the rear drum brakes stick during the hot summer months until it has been driven a few miles. Winter no problem).

What else should I be looking for?

I wouldn't say that you 'caused' it, but there is a lot of wear in that clutch centre which could well be the cause of the clutch sticking. TBH, you could probably dress most of those notches out (i'm referring to the ones in the grooves where the plates locate, not just the ones you're pointing to) and you'd be good to go, but if you ordered a new centre already I'm sure that'l go a long way to curing your problem. Remember to give your new friction discs a good soaking before you fit them, couple of hours is not enough, preferably overnight.
Best of luck :)
