cb750F tires
« on: July 23, 2014, 01:00:08 PM »
Sorry for the redundant post but I searched and can't seperate the mass of info. I'm going to take a trip on my 76 cb750F and it needs new tires. At the risk of starting a long a tire thread what are your favorite tires for my application? I don't mind a modern tread pattern on this bike. It's double disc on the front, stock  wire wheels it has 100/90/19 on the front and 130/90/18 on the rear. Rear too wide?

One thing you will notice is that wider tires will tend to square off around the time they are about 1/2 worn out. It is OK for straight on riding, when leaning over you have to transition over a square corner which is a bit weird feeling.

rear too wide for stock rim.  i ran 120/90-18 on stock rear 18"  comstar.  seemed to be pretty decent.  think stock rear size is 110/90-18

I've noticed the rear tire slip when leaned over. 110's it is. My buddy just got a 650 yammy, he wants tires same size and my brother is needing a set for his gl1000. maybe I can get a deal on 3 sets.

120/80 (or 90) in the rear for me.  Fits the rim better, easier to lean the bike way over, wider contact patch than stock.  Best compromise, IMO.

AM26 Roadriders are good tires- sticky, good wet traction.  You pay for it in tire life, rear will be done in less than 10k.  I'm on a 2 year old (~20k) front now, though.  Probably go 3 rears to 1 front.

D404 Dunlops are harder wearing, but less sticky.  Also has good rain traction, but in my experience the D404 slides around a bit more than a modern tread.

Pirelli Sport Demons are another good "modern" tread choice.

+1 on the Road riders. Nice aesthetic too.

You might be recommended BT45s. Personally I'd stear clear of them. Stick like #$%* to a blanket but square off very quickly.

Road riders it is, the parts superstore that advertises here doesn't list a 100/90/19 but I see them elsewhere. My local bike shop doesn't like to order Avons, I don't think they gat a deal on them. I'm on the fence about 110 or 120's on the back. The 130 is too wide for sure, it is squared off.

120 won't wear funny according to everybody, I would take the larger patch. If in true doubt run a 110, you can't go wrong...

You can't go wrong with the Metzeler ME88 (120/90 x 18) in the back and a Lazertec (3.25 x 19) in the front on the 750.

I looked at a couple web sites today and now everywhere I go on the internet Avon roadriders are looking back at me. Jeez,
Bwahahaha , the superstore is playing back all the tires I looked at right here next to my post. Shopping made easy.

Been running Bridgestone Spitfires. They do just fine. I don't INTENTIONALLY drag my knees.

I'd agree with that. I have the lazertec on the front but have a ME77 on the rear. Very happy with these tyres & combo. They seem like they will deliver a decent life as well. (I'm running them on my K, not F though).

What is it about the ME88 that is better than the Lasertec rear.  I have used the Lasertecs before and loved them.

I fitted a set of Continental Conti Classic Attack to my bike 100/90/19 F 110/90/18 R. These are radial tires and it has transformed the handling of the bike so much I may have to buy knee sliders. They are afaik the only radials made to fit our old bikes.

I got 15,000 miles out of the last ME88.  They will do better when tubeless for those that can run them that way.  Traction is good enough to drag the hard parts on both sides of the bike.  Whether it i better than the Lazertec rear on the 750, I couldn't say.

sounds like it might last almost twice as long, as I have only ever gotten 8000 or so out of a Lasertec, which is still at least 1000 more than any thing else I have ever used.

+1

But, if your rear rim is 1.85" then I'd go 110.  Better yet, Metzeler still makes the inch sizes, 4.00x18 correct for this bike.  But, almost certainly the local dealer will have to order them.

His rim, if stock, is 2.15" wide.

I went for the Avons, the motorcycle superstore doesn't have the am26 roadrider in 100/90/19 for the front. Too bad, I wanted to buy from a sponsor of the site.

Bad news (for me). Looks like Metzeler discontinued the ME88.

I ordered 2 sets of AM26 Avons from J&P. One set for me and one for my buddies 650 yammy. They assured me they would be fresh, I ordered in the afternoon, got an order confirmation and then a shipped confirmation before closing time. UPS hits here late in the day I could possibly have them monday. Why didn't I get tubes and rim strips? Duh.
