Oil chamber full - no oil in sump
« on: September 24, 2006, 03:33:46 AM »
I have just replaced the head on my bike - I have filled the oil tank and then turned ignition over without fuel. No oil came out the opening where my oil pressure guage sits. I removed sump plug and the sump is dry. What have I done wrong? Or haven't done?

so no oil will pump using just the starter?
Its a K7.
Do I need to fuel it up and give it a burst?

It will eventually pump round using kick or electric, but you have to fill all the galleries, oil filter, lines etc. Do you honestly think Honda licked it over till the oil light went out on the end of the line?

half fill the oil tank

hit the electric starter or use your leg - your call.

the oil light should go out after a few seconds

step 1...  check the oil level in the tank - top it up to dipstick level mark... then run it ...then check the level again

repeat step 1 as often as you like

keep doing the same thing for a while until you reach maximus fullus - if you put too much in - drain some out..

the sump only holds about a litre :)

I just had the same issue. No way I was going to start-up a fresh motor without priming it. I tried to turn it over with the electric starter and no plugs, but still no oil pressure.

Mike Rieck hit the nail on the head -

He suggested I remove one of the tappet covers and pour 1 quart into the head cover so it would go directly to the sump. It worked! I hit the starter and oil pressure climbed to 30 lbs immediately (plugs removed). I knew all parts had been given a clean supply of life blood.

Gordon

For a complete rebuild I usually pack the oil pump with either vasoline or lubriplate. Helps prime the pressure/scavage pump. (remember there are two rotors)

Problem solved. Removed oil pump and primed by hand in a bowl of oil - replaced carefully into position and replaced sump cover. Gave starter motor a turn over and pressure went up to 60psi. Happy Chappy here!!! ;D
