I just hauled a 68 Mustang over to western Washington with my '65 F 250 and its 390. 9 1/2-10 1/2 MPG in a persistent headwind. Not too shabby really considering, but it was 400 bucks for gas roundtrip.

Glad to see the there are still some folks makin' a regular stop to the gas stations. Parts have been hitting for my friends build. We will be yanking his pretty good 350 for something a little better soon. This 350 engine has some new higher comp oversize pistons, some what is called double hump heads circa 61 to 63 corvette with oversize valves cut in, new cam , extra four barrel carb just in case etc etc. Parts are about done rolling in and the exchange should be done when the colors are turning this fall and grey smoke is falling in the country roads  ;D

Think its a 65 or 66 Steve but will double check next time on my shift for wrenching. Here is a shot of the old mill that has been leaving a few double black stripes around town this summer already but it just does not make the front end light enough  :D

Good eye Breeze, mentioned in my opening it was a 65. ;) Went to look at a Black Bomber earlier this week and made an offer but was beat out. Here is a pic of that----BUT the guy has a RARE 61 Ford 390- 4 speed- triple 2 barrel- Starliner original black with 63,000 miles in another garage that he is giving his daughter as I was told by her. GOOGLE that car as it is a rare 2 year deal that with that combo that was shipped from the factory in the trunk(4 speed tranny and 3- 2 barrel carbs) and installed by the dealer pushed 401 HP back then. Nice guy and made a good connection so can stop back and get a pic if anybody cares. Here is a story about the same car from a different person  http://www.curbsideclassic.com/curbside-classics-american/curbside-classic-1961-ford-starliner/

I still have many of them.  ;D
Even the tiny little 300 in my '65 Skylark has plenty of power.
Several with radical cams, high compression and plenty of go... NOW!!!
My little "sleeper" is a '82 Buick Regal with a slightly hopped up '70 Olds 455.
The supercharged '97 Saleen Cobra Speedster scoots right along also.

I like my toys.  ;)

I still have my truck from when I was 18. I guess 22 years now. 1980 Chevy short wide with a 454. Rarely drive it anymore. It hurts at 5 miles to the gallon.

I love old V8's, they just sound so good with a nice pipe and none of that anti-pollution plumbing. They're horribly inefficient though, most modern 6's will take out a stock small block V8, and return twice the fuel economy. Modern V8's are great, but don't seem to have that old school V8 appeal. It's a conundrum alright.......... ;D

Years ago when I was a mechanic I worked on a large motor home that had a 440 Mopar engine with a huge Carter Thermoquad setting on top. I had the "dog house" or engine cover off so the engine was right there beside me, I took it out for a test drive and stood on it and the unmuffled roar that thermoquad put out when it's secondaries opened up with no air cleaner on it about scared the hell out me leaving my ears ringing.

+1 ...You're the MAN Dave...They made "that noise'....They Holley guys will very likely be insulted ;). All my friends ran Q Jets on our Pontiacs back in the day. If you did the adjustments correctly, they ran good. Only guys who were modified beyond stock were a threat.

He knew what he had Sean as for the Black Bomber. He was getting some very low offers. I offered $1500.00 but a Guy was coming down from the Lansing area the next day with a $2200.00 dollar bill in his pocket and then the add was deleted so assume he got it. There are a couple major E-bay flippers up there so I expect to see it popping up again all cleaned up  ;)

The craziest Quadrajet I ever saw wasn't a "quad" at all but instead a 2 barrel. It had the body of a Qjet but the secondary side was seal shut, no secondary butterflies at all but the casting of where they should be was there. It was on some asthmatic 307 and even though it looked like a big Qjet it was actually a small 2 barrel because it ran strictly off the tiny primaries. Has any one ever seen a Holley 3 barrel that came on some early big block Vettes?

Heck yeah. I have a Holley 3 barrel sitting on my garage shelf. Picked it up at a garage sale for 15 bucks 10+ years ago. Had never seen one before. Was going to put it on a big block Comet project, but sold that car. I figure another interesting project that can use it will come along eventually.

You could probably sell that 3 barrel for substantially more than $15, I'm no expert on all things Holley but from what I understand they only came on big block Vettes though I may be wrong on that. But anyhow it's probably worth some $ to someone that's restoring a Vette.

I've got two. A 4.7 L in the '02 Tundra and 289 ci in the '67 Mustang.  ;D
I've never owned anything smaller than a straight 6.

Considering that they only came in two sizes that I know of, 950 and 1050 cfm, and that only a supercharged small block or healthy big block can really use that sort  of airflow, then yes, such a carb would be way oversized on a 202 cubic inch engine. Of course there could have been a different, smaller, version for Australia, but it doesn't make much sense that there would be, since Holley was getting close to 900 cfm with a conventional 4 barrel.
The 3 barrel was developed for applications that needed more cfm than that, but where multiple carbs were not allowed, such as certain racing classes and on a few GM vehicles, after their corporate policy against multiple carbs went into effect for the '67 model year.

I'm sure I could sell the one I have for a lot more than I have in it, but I tend not to sell stuff like that. I'll either use it eventually, or trade it for some other oddball part that I need more.

I'm trying to decide what to do with the 30 year old Aussie built Ford Falcon station wagon that my father gave me for Christmas. He bought it in 1986 with 25,000 miles, and it's now done a whopping 70,000. As it's been sitting in his garage all it's life it's rust free, the paint is still shiny and the interior is like new, it's like driving a new car.

By 1984 Ford Australia decided that V8's weren't necessary (to be fair, Ford's crossflow 4.1 litre 6 was a pretty grunty engine, but Ford lost so many sales they reintroduced V8's in the next model) so I can't just do an engine swap without an engineers certificate. I've got a 351C sitting in my mother in law's garage that, back in the day, was putting out around 600 BHP before it cracked a piston.

After sitting for 20-odd years it'll need a full rebuild anyway, and then I might have problems with getting an engineers certificate for the engine swap, especially if he does an emissions test. So I'm thinking that maybe I should buy a late model Ford 5.4 litre all alloy DOHC V8, they're good for 350 BHP out of the box, weigh considerably less than the old iron V8's and aren't as stinky with EFI and cats.

This should make it a lot easier to keep it legal, but on the other hand, I do like that old 4V Cleveland lump. Decisions, decisions........ ;D

I still operate 2 V8s.  One in my 72 Ford truck, an FE 360.  I've had the truck since 1975.  It does what it does so well, there isn't much point in replacing it, even with 12MPG.  You can buy a lot of expensive gas for the price of a new truck that does the exact same job.
The other is my 89 IROC Camaro, TPI 350.  Bought it new.  Fun car to drive about.  The engine is good but everything on the car is plastic that falls apart with time.  The paint left about 15 years ago.  I've now got 35,000 miles on it.  Not sure how much longer I'll keep it, though.

The same rationale I use with my '65 F250.  As you say, you can buy a lot of gas for $35,000.  It would have been nice to have A/C on that trip hauling the Mustang, though. ;)
