The texture is really subtle and unique. This buddy of yours is getting one killer bike.

All costs the same, Tews. I did have to "buy" the silver because it's a custom color he doesn't spray regularly. But the black wrinkle is in his normal inventory of powders. But I'll spray 2 full frames plus maybe some other bits with the silver and use all the powder anyway.

It's a fine texture wrinkle, Don. I've seen it more coarse, that can look a bit lumpy in my opinion. This grit appears more "modern stock" like a Ducati or S1000RR. Highlighted with a few anodized bits, and some satin black ceramic pipes, should be super clean and tidy.

Hey Stev-o, the only thing this motor "shows" is that someone took the time to be thorough and touch every part. Only costs a nickel more to go first class... And like Don said, it's for a very good buddy so I want him to be very pleased and proud of the bike. Maybe keep him off his HD Bagger

and on an SOHC!

You're correct. Although if I was going to split the cases and really tear into everything I could see changing every fastener. Why not? You'll have them out anyway.

That was my thought too. But most folks generally don't want to spend the extra $400 on fasteners just to "look good" when in fact, the stock hardware if cleaned up works perfectly well. For me, its more about being thorough and complete in going through these bikes. I figure, if the bike lasts another 20-40 years (should based upon the quality of componentry Im using) then why not? Amortized over that many years, its an absolute bargain and non-issue.

You bring up a great point. Do you think that with all the coating, paint technology and piston coatings and/or micro slick coatings these bikes will actually hold up a lot longer depending on the care taken. When I put my 77 together, I was 100% going for longevity. This new one will be my radical build.

I think in a stock form, they had a very good chance of holding up for a very long time if properly taken care of. But that is the issue. Every one of my project bikes was an absolute turd of neglect when I inherited it. So during the rebuild, I am using all the latest/greatest products, coatings, hardware (SS ARP bolts) to provide the opportunity for the bike to endure, especially if properly taken care of.

I could go cheaper and redo the bike sooner, but I would rather do it once, the best I can, and do something else new than do anything over.

I met with Devin last Sunday as he and his family (wife and new baby boy) are moving back to Richmond and he's setting up shop nearby. Talked about doing a custom triple since the gsxr front end is pretty compatible already.

Also trying to talk him into another CB hub.... How about this:

A CB front hub that is ready to lace in to existing front forks, use stock fender and mechanical speedo, but, ready to go with rotor mounts for dual modern discs, and mounts for modern dual pot calipers? You get to retain all the stock attributes of your bike, but get dual, modern, lightweight, upgrading stopping.

No more GL conversions, no more caliper rebuilds, no more thinning and drilling rotors. Just, Ready to go modern brake parts available all over the Internet and CL from knuckleheads who've trashed their bikes and are parting them out

Any interest? I told him I'd buy 2 right now (I'd redo my 550 and this bike of course). While I love the gsxr swap, many don't. And the whole changeover can be pricey. This would be far less expensive and much easier as the most difficult aspect would be re-lacing. Everything else would essentially be a bolt on or stock install. I suggested he run a Poll thread on this forum to gauge interest. I bet he'd find a lot of it. Too many guys have to struggle with fabbing, finding, shimming spare parts to get it right. Or bulky vintage parts that help, but still don't equal modern performance and feel.

Sure, there will be those who "poo-poo" the whole mixture because of purity, but I bet there's a much broader audience of non-stock builds that would do it in a heartbeat due to budget vs desire.

The only downside i can think of is the late model brakes could completely out power the dated front end... I would imagine you would have to completely rebuild the front forks as well...

Yeah, that's something we talked about. But most blokes who are building their bikes tend to put new springs in anyway (or have). A good, fender-compatible fork brace might be a nice add-on product for him too.

I like options so I like your hub idea. I might be wrong but I think Mick's concern is whether the GSXR brakes may over stress the stock forks, as well as causing them to dive when applied.

All of the above as well as flex or twist while under brakes turning in, all later model bikes with the more modern style brakes have cartridge style forks and larger stanchions, there's plenty of good, conventional looking forks around that don't detract from the look of the old bikes too...

This bike, which has stalled due to my buddy needing to bail on the build, will be down streamed to my 16 year old. Its order of priority: Finish 550. Move 500 to final fab. Build R90. Finish 16 YO car. THEN, this bike. He has the Suzi 500 to ride in the interim and the 550.

Spent the day yesterday with College Boy at a local Italian shop getting inspirations and ergo's for his subframe. And, of course, ogling the MVAs, Aprillas and a few Ducs. Not a bad way to spend the day in the rain

Don't think I'll do a build thread on it anywhere as it would serve less "inspirational" here (obviously wrong brand) and I don't spend any time on Beemer forum (too many purists for me).

A thread here would be too much like "Hey! Look how cool I am!" Pictures of it may show up sometime in the company of my other builds out on the road, but that's probably it.

Besides, if I posted everything I build/built it would deprive me of too much time with greasy knuckles
