What did you end up doing to sort it out?

IW

After a day and a half messing with it, I was starting to get so far off, things were just getting worse. My head hurt. Realized that at one point while adjusting I jumped a tooth on chain as well (long story) So I went back, double checked I still had TDC right (using piston stop), then started from scratch again, lining up marks on cam like stock cam. I called webcam and started going over numbers with them. Turns out, with my engine, lined up dead straight cam was about 7 degrees advanced. So I kept retarding cam until I reached my numbers. Now I really understand it though. Learned a lot.

All that matters is you got it right and will get it right in future....just a lot faster. ;D
I think now you understand what I meant with the opening and closing #'s on the valves. You can see how close they are.
That is going to be a nice engine.....it will definitely will let you know it isn't a 45 or 50 HP stock thing.

Yeah, as soon as I started getting closer, a light just came on and I "got it." Glad I didnt just settle, with all the time I put in to the rest of the motor to make it right. Should be easy from here on out, as everything else on the bike I have done before.

Installed all balls steering bearings, not too hard. Quick question about adjustment/tightness. I know it's hard to quantify, but (without forks installed) should the triple stay in place or easily move back and forth? Right now I can move easily with my hands but it stays in place if I move frame around. (Hope this makes sense)

A tooth out on the cam sprocket ... makes sense now. Your engine will thank you later for getting it right.  8)

Save it for the next one ;)

As for your bearing thing, I do recall that's exactly how it moved with the stock bearings, free with hand but in place when I was moving the frame, so it's probably fine if you have everything torqued down on the stem...

So the fat washer worked with the stock stem?
I'm getting ready to do this tomorrow.

Yeah fat washer worked for me. Frame is a 71, triple is from '74. My kit instructions said how to measure before installing.

Well, I was going to install oil pump with new stopper and spring, but after looking it over from just the outside, I don't even want to put this pump back in the motor. Housing has obviously been taken apart, most screws are stripped out. One is missing between body and base, and appears not even a gasket in there. How do people think this is OK!?

Dave - just a reminder to clean the powder cost off the frame where the battery NEG cable attaches. There, and near the head stock where the HORN and LIGHT will ground. The powder coat can prevent a good, solid GROUND from occurring and you can have difficulties with the proper operation.

Frame looks very pretty in that gloss finish.

Thanks! I knew about the spot where the Battery negative goes but would have overlooked horn/light.

Brought some stuff to work today to get done. Got bronze bushings installed in freshly powder coated swingarm. Froze bushings, heated swingarm with 500w work light, installed with some all thread. Went waaaay too easy. Now I don't know what to do with myself

Made some adjustments to all balls steering bearings/triple to close gap on fork ears after reading a recent thread in another section.

Thin washer on bottom, ground down top cap. Kept upper dust seal.
Also front spoke kit arrived...

Do the nonos have chambers or straight through? I've been considering that option too after reading around here. Many seem to love the 300s for an agressive street 836...
