Oh, and I am running pods as well--Kott Motorcycles knows how to tune and jet carbs for these bikes that is for certain.

PODS!!??? On a 550!!?? GASP!!! Girl, don't you know that Pods invert the flux turbulence pattern induced by the stock airbox??  :o :o ;)
How many miles have you logged with pods so far, Lisa? 8)

18,000 miles and counting since 2010.
My 550 gets 50+ mpg consistently on highway and 45-48 on twisties.  I love my 550
You have less weight to carry though.   ;)

Yes, I imagine the 100 extra pounds or so that my bike had to carry probably had some impact on mileage. LOL

Awww, aren't you all sweet.  This is the only place where I get that type of a response! :-*  Oh, and I am running pods as well--Kott Motorcycles knows how to tune and jet carbs for these bikes that is for certain.  I have no idea what type of mufflers/pipes I have.  I will take a closer look when I get home.

"Kott Motorcycles knows how to tune and jet carbs for these bikes that is for certain." While they may be able to tune carbs can they show me a before and after dyno run with pods being the only change and it made more power than stock? It may run fine and dandy but better than the stock air box I have my doubts. I am still waiting after 15 years for someone to post proof that they got pods to work better than a properly tuned stock air box.

You're a serious kind of fellow aren't you Powderman? ;)  All I'm saying is I get great gas mileage and with pods.  Not making any other claims--50 mpg with over 18,000 miles works just fine for me.

The fact that she is getting 20% better fuel mileage than the average 550 is proof that her motor is operating more efficiently than most. ;) The stock 550 air filter has a very small surface area compared to a stock 750, and Honda jetted the carburetors to operate with this restricted input, much the same as running with the choke partially on.

Lisa, please post your current jetting, so others might learn from your/Kott's experience.

When he was modifying the bike for me I never asked.  They have not been messed with since.  When I speak to him again I will ask him.  He seems to have it dialed in.

No wonder you're getting good mileage. Try it using the engine.   :P
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

finally getting my mpg back to where about the norms, and performance is great all around.  needing may be final carb sync and a/f screw adjusted as rpm takes several seconds to come down to idle.

current configurations
1976 cb550k with 087A carbs

cb650 camshaft
stock airbox intake with UNI foam filter
38 idle/slow jets
a/f screw at 1 3/4 turns out
needle clips at 2nd notch from top
100 main jets
motogpwerks exhaust pipes
41mpg on the last 100 miles commute
great accelleration all the way up to 80mph
no popping on deceleration
rpm hangs a bit as slowing down coming to a stop
carbs probably have come off the bike at least 10 times!

i hope all these info helps out some of you guys who's going through tuning/jettings process
