Taking son/daughter on rides
« on: July 29, 2014, 03:14:22 PM »
I am wondering how old your son/daughter was before you would take them out for some rides?  I have taken my son out (4 years old) around the neighborhood roads and he seems to really enjoy it.  I would love to take him for a slightly longer ride but am scared he is to young.  When have your children expressed an interest to ride and when have you let them?

I put them in front of me and had a tank bag on.  They were big enough my arms would go underneath there arm pits so I had pretty good control of them.  Not sure what age they were.
We don't have any busy roads around where i live so we just kept going as long as they were saying more.

I took mine out when their legs were long enough for them to be able to sit and
have their feet rest on the passenger pegs. On a CL 175. Trail riding earlier than that. That got them interested. They were
a little apprehensive about the street the first time. I'll never forget my daughter's
reaction once as we crossed the Missouri river bridge. She never said anything, but her body language sure did. She was maybe in the fifth grade. After a few rides, she got
into it..Faster Dad, Faster! :)...On a serious note, ALWAYS err on the side of safety.
Make sure they're dressed well with the appropriate safety equipment, and avoid routes with a lot of traffic. We didn't do it a lot, but both son and daughter knew
what to do/how to act. We were never in a hurry, just enjoyed the ride.

Right, I wouldn't want to be rushing him to daycare or anything.  Just take him for a little longer ride.  His mother won't allow it but I feel I need to test the waters eventually  :)

All four of mine I had on the front or behind me when they had interest.  My girls were just three when they wanted to go.  I found a HJC CL-Y for cheap for them to use.
They'd sit in front of me, and I'd pin their legs with mine against the tank, and they'd reach up and hold on to the outside of my elbows.  they won't let go until full stop.
Once they can reach the rear pegs, we'll get out on the road....
They have great balance.  They both rode pedal bikes shortly after turning three.
They are four, and fearless.... ::)

That's only a relatively new law Mick, was only introduced a few years ago.  I have taken my kids for a ride around the paddock ever since I got a bike again, I think the youngest was 3.  I took my nephew for a ride when he was 2.  I haven't taken them on the road as yet, I need to find a road helmet that fits their head properly.  The youngest is now nearly 8. ;D

Here in Maine, passengers under 18 have to wear a helmet. There are no age restrictions. Though, my wife also set the requirement that they need to be able to reach the rear pegs. My girls were 7 when they started riding with my. It's looking like my son's first ride will be in a year or so when he turns 5.

That said, I've only taken them on rides around town since they get bored after about 20-30 minutes.

I used to do tire smoking holeshots, in a parking lot, on my 836, with a 4 or 5 year-old, sitting in front of me..he loved it..
