Looking for a serial card recommendation
« on: July 28, 2014, 09:50:48 AM »
I have a Dell XPS 8700 running Windows 8. Unfortunately, it seems no one ships PC's with serial cards anymore, too antiquated I guess.  ;) However, I have one device that requires a serial interface. Tried the serial to USB interface route, no luck seems more a gimmick than a workable solution so I would rather just install a serial card. I did some Googling and it seems the recommendations are spotty for various cards depending on the OS and processor chip sets.

Does anyone have a specific brand card they could recommend given the above requirements?

Bob, have you looked at the serial cards offered at Newegg.com? I found a couple that support Windows 8.

Bill, thanks for the offer. I did check Newegg and they seemed to have one that fits the bill so I ordered it. Serial cards are pretty cheap these days, justlike film cameras.  ;D

They are a good source for hardware. I had a need to transfer programs from an XP to floppy disk for my CNC mill, and I found an external floppy drive with a USB plug that solved the problem for about $30.
You mean the old film cameras that are the bulk of my inheritance aren't worth anything?  :'( :'( :'(

I use this on my Windows 8 laptop: http://www.tripplite.com/high-speed-usb-to-serial-adapter-keyspan~USA19HS/

It's easy to use and has been very reliable. You just plug it into a USB port on your machine.

Sorry Bob, I was commenting from my phone and hadn't read your entire post. Do you know what type of expansion slots you have available on your motherboard? According to Google, it looks like you may have a PCI-E slot open. In that case, I'd recommend this card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815166032

I have not used this exact card before but I have used many Rosewill cards in the past and have not had an issue. If you don't have any available slots internally I would still recommend that USB to serial adapter. I've owned 4 of them and never had an issue. The only reason I've had so many is that they were company owned and I had to get a new one when I changed jobs. Anyway, that's my two cents.

Wow,  that's the card I ordered.  ;) I only have 2 slots available so one will get the serial card and the other will be used for Firewire for yet another older device, a scanner.
