650 hard tail frame help
« on: August 05, 2014, 11:02:04 AM »
Hello all picked up this 650 hard tail frame a while back and finally got some time to work on it.

Stripped it all down wanted to see what was under the crap paint. Put in a 550 engine, wheels and forks couldnt stand the comstars.

I ran into this problem

This is a bit out of my comfort zone on what to do have talked to a few people today and have gotten these ideas

-weld plates on the outside frame and make the correct axle holes
-use one inch bearing and axle on the 550 hub (not sure how that would work)
-cut out the axle holders and weld new ones in with correct holes
-find a one inch harley hub and rim (kind of want to use what I have 550 stuff)

Any suggestion or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks Matt

I don't like the look of that at all. Interior weld on left side looks like crap. Slots are "hand cut" and not square or parallel. Do yourself a favor, remove those plates, fab some proper ones, and weld them in correctly. Me, I'd never trust a PO fabricator that left signs of their workmanship at that level.

I'd hate to think of you on that bike and your little girl at the house waiting for your return-

I agree.  Replace the plates. I think the rest of the frame needs to be scrutinized as well.

The plates can be fixed but they are cheap to buy.
Are the tubes? Coming down to the axle plates solid, they sorta look like it. If they are and it was me, i would change it..

Thanks guys replacing them seems like the way to go. I will probally just get rid of it I can weld but nothing that would support my ass. I got it just to flip but thought it would be fun to do something different so no big loss.

If I were you I'd add an angle support under the seat or at least some gussets to help stiffen that rear axle.

Here's a shot of an '81 CB650 hardtail I did if it helps:

Yeah, I lobbied for one (and a slightly shorter tail) but was out voted by the two other guys I did the build with. It was auctioned off for charity. So, hopefully the new owner will add one.

What's the point of riding a bike like that without some imbedded danger to the rider  ???
