CB400 four clutch drag
« on: July 29, 2014, 03:17:01 pm »
Hi, I have 1975 CB400 four, the clutch was slipping so I decided to fit new friction plates, other than slipping the clutch action was light and neutral selection was easy, having fitted the plates I can not get the clutch to adjust properly, the action is heavy and does not feel right neutral selection is difficult/near impossible its got to be something I have done wrong but I can't figure out what, can anyone help. Thanks

What type of oil did you put back in was it the same grade/type? Are you ajusting the clutch at the cover or only on the lever?

I had got this problem too. Clutch did not work at all. I thought I had made a msitake when mounting the new fibver plates. Checked and found OK. I had to rock the bike forwards- backwards some times on 2:nd gear to make the clucth to work.
Then problem with finding neautral when hot.

OIL...
I used Castrol 4T Act Evo 20W-40 for the first 500km's break-in. Horrible clutch glue.
Castrol 4T Act Evo 20W-50.... Additional Zinc (ZDDP) helped some. Finding neutral easier but still dragging clutch when cold. (When not used fo a day or 2)

I have got new oil today, Red Line motor cycle oil 20W-50 and additional bottle of 20W-60. I hope this will solve the clutch issues when oil is of best type of synthetic with plenty of zinc + phosphorous in it.

Back in the days (79-90) I never had clutch issues like this. Cheap car oils, Quaker State single grade, Hance & Vines oil, Castrol GTX 2 and 3 car oils, Mobile One car oil. The last one caused some slip when gearing to 5:th at 190km/h and max throttle.
