400f gear linkage
« on: September 23, 2006, 02:10:10 PM »
reference the attached picture from the Honda parts fiche.
I have tried my gearshift as pictured and also with arm (22) the other way round.
It seems to be a more positive shift with it the opposite to the picture, also the line of the rod is parallel to the lever that way, has anyone else experimented in this way?
I also require the 2 rubber boots to protect the ball joints, where can these be got from?

I haven't tried it... but it must run extremely close to the sprocket cover like that? By "the other way round" you do mean back-to-front, rather than upside down, don't you (else that'd change it to a 1-up-5-down change, though that would probably change up gears higher as foot pressure that way is more positive)?

For boots I got a perfect used set from a newer GSXR.

Like Tim I'm fuzzy about you're situation. Did you remove & rerivot the joint from the shifter arm? Seems to me like the joint angles are straightest in the original position. Give us a look.

Ok, so is everyone else as clueless as I am on what the original poster is trying to say?  I see  three pics that match the OEM configuration.  What's all this "other way round" biz??

look at parts fiche and try to imagine the ball joint facing into the engine instead of away from!

When I get time I will turn it, (lever part #22), round and post a picture of that too.

I szeem to remember that if the front bit is reversed the ball joint hits the casing.

thanks for that colb, I called at a local dealer who had them in stock, a little more expensive but no postage, perfect fit.

I have now turned round the lever (22) as can be seen in pictures, and really feel the change is an improvment both visually and mechanically.

This is the way I built it up originally because it looked right, I then noticed photos that had it other way around and thought I've got it wrong again, so put together the Honda way, while riding I had a few false neutrals and the change didn't feel as positive, that is reason for original post.

No sign of hitting the casing and I can position the lever in a comfortable postition for mysef. I know of another forum member who runs their bike like this, but would still like to hear of other peoples views.
