Author Topic: Gauge face screw size (Read 1302 times)

I've been working on replacing the gauge faces and one of the two little screws was badly rusted somehow, and instantly stripped. Thankfully a fine left handed drill bit was able to get the rest of it out nicely, but now I'm short one. I PMed Marce/LeCram but he hasn't replied yet. Search isn't giving me any answers either. Does anyone know what size machine screws are these?

I believe the screw is same size as the later style petcock screw, not sure about the length though

I measured one, length is 5mm, but not sure what diameter and pitch...

Just unscrew the good screw that you have and take it to the hardware store with you.

Did that before posting, not one local store had anything close. Smallest ones they have are too thick.

Yea, last resort. Anyone have spares laying around??

boltdepot.com has smaller metric screws, but I don't have a good way to determine the pitch. Vernier may not be the best way to find out the diameter but its better than nothing

Sorry, don't have the answer to your question- but if you have a hobby shop locally that sells stuff for radio controlled model airplanes, they use a lot of tiny metric screws etc...

Nice tip Jerry! But unfortunately not much of those places around here. I measured the diameter with a caliper and its 2mm +/- 0.2mm so I'm going to take a chance and order some from boltdepot. They do have 2mm with a .4mm pitch, cheap enough a gamble. Let's hope it works. Only caveat now would be that they won't be black, so another restoration sin there

I am pretty sure I can find one for you. I took apart some really busted gauges while ago and saved all parts. Do you want me to look?

So, turns out 2mm screws are too thin and 2.5mm are too thick

This is a PITA odd size, so I might need one of you guys to help me with a spare or two

I have an old ISO chart for machine screws and once upon a time there was an M2.2 x .45 which was considered a coarse thread. There were also MF2.2 x .25 and MF2.3 x .25 (fine thread) machine screws. Now, are they still available and where, and most importantly are either of these your solution....I don't have a clue but I'm sure there's some internet outfit somewhere that can sell you a few to try out.

I use these people and I have the following screws as part of my business work ... M1.4,M.16,M2.0, M2.5, M2.6 all metric coarse, mainly stainless steel grade A2

I assume the bike is a CB750K2, If so I will take one out of a clock on Tuesday when I am back at work & measure it and if I have any the correct size you can have for free but not sure on postage, as I am in the UK.

I am pretty sure if they are the same as the 750K0 though that they are standard M2.0 coarse thread (black finish) Mine will be A2 stainless steel.

Thanks AshD, I think I'm ok for now, goldarrow is sending me two, and I'm sure I'll find one or two more from another member here in the US. Its is a K2, and the M2.0 and M2.5 didn't work, its gotta be M2.3 which I can't find...

I ran into that via google, but they don't show what length. Not only that, when I add to cart it says out of stock. I might just have enough now that a few members are helping out. Great forum, great community!

Bought a donor gauge from goldarrow, and jtb sent me two screws, just enough to complete my spare set. Thanks guys!
