1978 CB550 Carbs
« on: February 16, 2015, 07:33:21 PM »
I took apart my leaky carbs of my 78 cb550. I thought I payed pretty good attention when I took them apart, but now that I'm cleaning everything up and putting them back together I have a couple questions that I could use some help with. I've searched online and threw the forum but can't find my answers. They are Keihin PD carbs, on the side of the carb they are stamped "PD 45 CAPKI". I've looked for exploded views online and can't find one for this carb. The bike ran pretty good but needed the carbs sync'd and points adjusted.

1. I bought a gasket kit and it came with 5 o-ring gaskets, float bowel gasket, and card board type gasket for the top of the carb. I have one kit for each carb. I can't find a spot for all 5 o-rings. I have one for the main jet and one for the float bowl drain screw, where do the other 3 gaskets go (they are a little bigger than the other 2)?

2. Does anyone know if the the needle adjustment screw has an o-ring gasket that belongs on it? 3 of the needle adjustment screws that I took out did not have one and one did. I doesn't look like one belongs there.

Judging by the parts diagram on bike bandit, the seal kit should only have 4 o rings in it. The larger ones are for the fuel rail tubes and the smaller ones are for the float bowl drain and the needle adjustment screw. I don't remember the main jet having and o ring on it. If you look under FAQ section for the 550 there is a step by step guide for rebuilding the pd carbs

I have a '78 550 but they are PD46C carbs. I didn't know there were other carbs on the '78 550. But on mine the main jet doesn't have an oring. Andy is right about the oring locations.

+1 on Dave's comments. Same carbs on my '78 550K and o-ring requirements. Perhaps member Harisuluv could offer you some guidance on those carbs you have.
