Oil filter spring
« on: March 16, 2015, 06:59:00 AM »
Guys

Just pulled the oil filter on my 78 550/4 F2 to do oil change and noticed that the small spring and washer were missing from the assembly. Question is has any damage been done to the engine running it like this.

What does the spring do, is it to allow the filter to be bypassed if it becomes blocked?

Have ordered new spring from DS.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

You're still going to get good oil flow, its just that some of it may not be clean if the filter shifted to expose the bolt holes.
Glad the correct parts are going back in.

I did run an oil change or two - 1500 miles each - before I realized the spring is missing.  No damage occured.
