In 20+ seasons of hunting deer I never once saw deer pick me out from a distance and react to me, not even to a group of us forming up to drive deer. They will react when you get within 100 yards or so, especially if you are moving and they often will circle to put you up wind so they can keep track of you.
As a driver in group hunt the deer often stayed 50 to 100 yards in front of us, my uncle taught us to insure we were shooting away from the drivers because they would be close to the deer, something Dick Cheney's uncle forgot to teach him...
