Hi,

the CB550 tranny fiche can be found at : http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb550k1-four-1975-usa_model466/partslist/E++05.html#results

But I'm blessed if I can find a pin that looks that small. What dimensions has it got. You might have a VERY big hand.

I had thought that, or perhaps shift fork pin, but it looks too slim in diameter. Maybe it came from somewhere else and washed up in the pan or lower crankcase ?

I agree, worth checking your needle bearings to see if there is a roller missing and possibly a broken cage.

Hi Guys.
You know what they say about the size of a mans hands......My hands are sadly average. Thanks for all the feedback. The Shift Drum pin is in. and it's way smaller than any of the roller bearings that I could see in the transmission....I looked at the exploded diagrams and all the small pins are accounted for.

The cases are sealed up so hopefully that isn't the center diametric Falengey self rectifying pin that holds the balance of the engine universe in place.  :-[

Yeah I thought so too. But it's so much smaller than all the other needle rollers. It's 5mmx1mm.

I agree with strynboen, the secondry oil pump on the counter shaft in 550s has a locating pin like that which keeps it together?not found in 500s,part number 78 in the link provided by vfour freak?

part number 37 in this link(91103-374-003).

MMM yeah. I'm pretty sure that dowel pin is in place. If it is that one, how important would it be if it was missing? Should I split the cases again to inspect?

Thanks for the input guys I appreciate it.

Im almost a 100% sure the dowel pin is in place at the top of the secondary pump...Might the smaller pin be similar to the one in the main oil pump that holds the trochoid gear and shaft together? And if so how the hell did it fall out.. This engine has been completely stripped and vapour blasted so it would have been lost if it fell out during use.

Hi guys. Yes Dave you nailed it. Split the cases again and it is the pin. A bit of extra work but worth it. Now I know. Thanks for the help guys. Would be stuck without this resource.

Well done !

Pulling the motor apart again is a pain, but you could never have run the motor with an easy mind knowing there was a "spare bit" left over.

Thanks Kev.
I would have sleepless nights about that pin if I didn't find it's home. Its a good thing I split them again. I put too much honda bond on the cases the first time around so that vould also have caused some problems further down the line.

yeah good one, stryboen spotted it first, theres nothing wrong with pulling down a motor again in cases like this and its good experience, just out of interest that little oil pump only spins depending on road speed, not what gear or rpm your doing,it doesn't turn when your stationary.

Good info Dave. Yeah Strynboen. Its more luck that I spotted the pin on my bench more than anything else. Made some more progress after putting the cases back....does it matter what position the selector drum plate is when putting together the shift assembly?

Hi again.

I feel like I should give some background on this bike. Last year I bought a basket case 75 400f that I am "currently" restoring/modifying to the best of my financial ability.( the bike stood outside for about 25 years and is way past restoring). So while this was happening I was in need of transport so I bought  this 550. This bike has now over taken the 400 in importance and went from some basic fixes to pulling and splitting the engine.

It started with a new front tire, brakes and fork seals. Then I moved on to replacing a cracked sump, broken kick start and tracking down a missing side cover. Fixing niggling electrical issues and replacing the solenoid.  Then I pulled the carbs to give them a clean and new O rings as the floats were getting stuck and bowls would overflow. While doing this I started looking at all the oil leaks, the slipping clutch, the obvious chain noise from the engine and a sheared off 8mm engine bold that was just sitting loosely in the engine. So I made the decision and pulled that sucker out.

While cleaning the engine I decided to have it vapour blasted( I had this done to the 400 and there's no turning back). So here I am now. New chains installed, new seals, Put that missing pin back thanks to you guys. Put the cylinders back op last night and discovered bent ex valves.......  I was getting ready to throw this back in the frame over the weekend and to start enjoying spring!  I still have all new cables and clutch plates to go back on with slightly lower bars and now app. new ex Valves. This bike is going to be purring like a kitten when this is all said and done......I hope.

Has this just become a build thread?

It appears so !

Sit in an imaginary circle, take a deep breath, and then say as firmly as you can : "my name is Straat-toe, I am a CB rebuilder".
You will feel much better for it.

Seriously, these builds are needed now while the parts are still available. And you have CMSNL on your door step, so go for it !

ha ha.
I wish they were on my Doorstep. I have my  Honda dealership (been able to get most parts for the 550 from them) and some breakers yards. And when I feel Flush David Silver. My name is Afrikaans not Dutch. Sadly for Bike rebuilding I live in Cape Town South Africa. Great for weather, rides wine whatever. Just not for importing parts.
