Dumb and dumber.
« on: September 25, 2006, 07:58:04 PM »
Yea, I know, but every once and a while......

I was getting on the freeway, on one of those round'a bouts they have here in San Antonio that everybody does about 25 on (that's a hell of a way to make an on-ramp)....I was following a big truck and one of those big jap cruisers (1100-1300 V), he was tailgating the truck in a real bad way.  Must've been 4 or 5 ft. off the back of the truck.  When we were just about to straighten out to get on, I dumped it into 1st and slammed it (out to the middle lane).  I'd checked the traffic and there was just enough space (I figured at a glance).  In one lane over, a Suburban almost caught me at 70, but I left him behind and then promptly slowed back down to 65-70 (flowing with traffic).

I don't do this sort of thing too often, but I know how fast this ol' 836 is.  Good thing or i'd be dead.......kids, don't do this at home.

That's about a 9.9 on the sphincter pucker scale!...the kind of thing you do once, then ask why the hell you did it. Then, hopefully, never do it again. Think of all the 'what ifs?'.

It's part of my regular route, but usually I don't hit the center lane till 2nd gear.

I have done these in a car at 35+ with both me at the wheel and the Grandfather in-law (last marriage)(crazy bastard) he was swearing the whole way. Drove like a crazy man on his way to the grave.  ;D  ::) Scarry ride as far as I am concerned.

Think of all the 'what ifs?'.

Yes, the only real risk is the "what ifs"

....but I know this bike and what it can do extreemly well, and fortunately for me I'm a good judge of distance and speed.  I'm no beginner, I've been riding for 35 years.  I certainly get just a little wild, occationally, but the key is knowing when you can and when you can't.  I'm much more consevative than I was a number of years ago......and yes, this was the only time I've thrown it into the center lane in 1st gear, but gee, it only takes a couple seconds to get 45-50 on this ol' thing.

I used up all my luck many, many years ago.  Now all I have is the Grace of God.  Lot better than luck!!
