Shinko's look like they use lot's of rubber. What paint did you use for your carburetors ?   they look Good.

My father took care of the carbs. I think he used plasti-kote gasoline resistant paint.

Ordered new EBC brake shoes. The current shoes look good, but I've always heard of old shoes coming apart and locking up wheels. No thanks!

Polished up the front wheel:


Decided it would be good to repaint these heat shields. I first sprayed BBQ paint, but found that it was way too flat. So I painted some Semi-gloss enamel over it. Hope it holds up; these shields shouldn't be getting too hot:

Brake hubs are polished and rebuild. Tires mounted. Brakes adjusted. Got a roller now, son.

Gramna2: Great that you brought up the seat. The seat is the very next thing to do after I get a few miles on the bike when Powderman finishes the exhaust. I think the seat is "saddled" from wear. It's my understanding that SL350 seats should look tall and flat. They shouldn't have a formed saddle. My guess is this needs some form work and a new seat cover. Since I'm going that far, might as well blast and powder coat the seat pan. After the seat, I'm hoping to just drive the piss out of the bike.

People ask me when I'm going to repaint it. Why should I be in a hurry? If I repainted the bike, I would never take it on the dirt. This is a bike that needs to be USED and abused "with care". If I painted it too soon, I would drive it like a grandpa.

Steve-o: Those are Shinko 241s. They are the ONLY tires you can buy that have an OEM look to them that will fit on the stock rims. I was however left with a dilemma when buying tires. What would you guys all have done?

Buy the Shinkos. This will give it the stock look. Plus, it's off road tires for an off-road bike. There's a problem though. The front tire is a little bit wider than stock. According to the tire chart, it's still in the "acceptable" range, but it won't be optimal. Rear is same size as OEM rear.

Buy the generic Dunlops. This won't give the bike a stock look and they are road tires. The front will have the exact same size as the OEM size. Rear is same as OEM rear.

I choose to go with the Shinkos since this is a novelty bike. I plan to take it camping a lot! The pair of Shinkos were $100 including shipping.

Hey grcamna2, sorry for the really long response.

I'm eventually going to replace the seat foam and cover. I did a test between peanut oil, Mother's "Back to Black", and some highly regarded leather restorer (comes in that brown bottle). Peanut oil was the winner, hands down. Just goes to show that natural products can sometimes be the winner!

I shined up the seat (it actually looks pretty good now), replaced the rear passenger foot pegs, degreased the chain in diesel oil, and polished both sides of the engine. All that I'm waiting for now is my pipes to show up from Powderman.

This should look like a real nice ride for how much money total I've got into it (only a few hundred total):



I also removed most of the black off of the rear of the frame (looked terrible). It's now back to silver, the way it should be!

New throttle cable.


What is the part number for the throttle cable?  When I look on the Barnett site all they show is clutch stuff for the 350 SL/CL/CB's.

Clutch push rod seal leaks bad. 1 drop per foot, wow!

That's still the plan. I'm becoming attached to it, but at this point, I could just get a new off-road bike…haha. The seating position is a bit weird for me, but it's a fun bike to ride around.

Next steps are to adjust the brakes some more. This thing needs new rear shocks, badly. I guess some Hagons are in order.

Not in a hurry to sell it. Wouldn't mind to continue hanging on to it while the prices keep going up.

SL prices do seem to keep rising and they are a fun bike to ride.  I sold a cosmetically very clean  original with a bad kick start system for 650, you could be in the 3k range if the right bidders came along...Larry

I'm probably going to list it next week on Craigslist. I feel like I'm loosing my left nut, but this isn't the bike for me. It's totally a novelty bike and nothing more.

Hmm…3k sounds mighty fine. I'm thinking about $2,500, but maybe that's too low?

Here's what's been done:

New Battery
New OEM throttle tube
New Barnett Throttle Cable
New OEM grips
New OEM various rubbers (kick starter, etc)
New OEM Tool Bag
New OEM exhaust crush washers
New OEM Air cleaners
New OEM headlamp rim (last one in the world left, probably)
New OEM rear shocks
New Shinko Tires and tubes
New EBC Brake Shoes (front and rear)
New Mirrors
New Rear Footpegs
Carbs rebuilt and refinished
Exhaust pipes are ceramic coated
Gauges refinished
Forks rebuilt and polished using OEM fasteners. This includes new Honda fork fluid and fork seals.
Valves set
Timing set
Timing chain set
Steering bearings set
Oil recently changed. Oil filter has been cleaned.
My personal maintenance log

Compression is 170/163 PSI @ 2700 feet using a regular automotive compression gauge. This is a great and solid reading that means the engine is very strong. When the bike gets more miles on it, I wouldn’t doubt it opening up even more.
