1970 Honda CT70 Fix Her Up!
« on: August 07, 2014, 08:59:59 PM »
Well first bike project thats not a big four cylinder, so this should be a fun little project!  Bought this little baby off a local Facebook Page that holds "for sale" adds.  Although I'm in love with the little bike, she's not for me.  A buddy of mine wanted a starter bike for his son so I volunteered to get him a decent starter point!  Picked her up complete for 300$ which I think was fair.  Needs a few small parts Ill have to order, but besides that this should be fun!  Lets Go!!

Its funny, I have the big bikes to ride all day on the highway but I still can't wait to put around on this little thing! Hopefully ill have that little carb off soon and see how much trouble I'm in.  Also starting a big Cb 550 and 500 project so things will be busy in the shop!

Set up the 70 in my shop and have gotten  few things done.  Pulled the carbs off and cleaned them, even though they were great looking inside, If I would have thrown a spark plug and fuel in it I bet it would have started.  Still waiting on parts to come in!

I am having a issue getting the axle on the front out so i can clean the brakes and paint the rims,  Any trick on this or am i missing something!? Had to use heat to remove the bolt!

Parts came in!  Also got a new speedo, not pictured though its sweet.

I rebuild the carbs with a kit from Honda, but one thing i can't figure out is how to get this part to seal correctly, You can't see light through around the corners so I know its not sealing, this has the little gold filter screen under a cap and rubber seal.

Still went ahead and installed the carb, I attempted to start her but no luck.  Carb is getting gas, and engine has spark and new spark plug.  The battery says it should be ready to use but I suspect I need a special charger to charge the little 6V with the odd connecting ends instead of regular battery leads.  Also, The bike didn't come with keys, but i can turn the switch to the run position with a flathead.  Could this be a issue as well?  New Air-cleaner looks awesome though!

Tyler,
That's a nice little bike ! Did you do a cold compression check(it takes a special 10mm adapter & you might be able to ask your friends over at the salvage yard to do it)on it? I think just checking the valve clearance will help also, they're 002. for each one and sometimes the valve clearance gets too tight and it holds the valves open slightly just enough to keep it from full compression. I think you may also need to invest(very small $)in a flywheel puller to get at the points so you can  remove them and clean/file them and then correctly set the timing w/ the points gap;if it's any Honda single I've ever known she'll fire up good after that !

Hit a bit of a wall here guys.  So I charged the new battery full, used a flathead to turn the key ignition and put a screw driver in the plug cap, kicked her over and had spark, had fuel in the carb as well.  Installed the cap on the spark plug, but wouldn't start or even try to sputter or anything, just kick kick kick.  What am I missing?...NO CLUE!  took her down to the salvage yard and they adjusted the valve clearance and set points, as well as used a puller to pull off the flywheel and took a look at the " Spark Advancer" I believe he said.  HE said the springs were work and not letting the little weights with the back tips do there job.  Because of this he said one of those weights is blocking the flywheel from going back on, therefore rendering the bike even further useless until i can figure this out. Online it doesn't seem you can come by these springs anywhere, you can buy the entire assembly, just no springs.  Oh yeah it also has no spark anymore.  What do I do! Sorry about the crappy pics.

Under the flywheel lies this..

He said this was the problem...

I was told that these things which move back and forth will not stay open and thats what blocking the flywheel from sliding back on.

I really want to get this going for my buddies son before it gets cold so if someone had any advice I would really appreciate it!

I think I'd tell your friend he needs parts and then have one of us members who's familiar w/ this bike visit & help you figure out the next step.

Tyler,
That's a real 'cult classic bike you're working on there and there's lot's of stuff for it online but I haven't been looking myself;I think someone on another forum dedicated to the CT70's & Z50 'Mini-Trails' will be able to help you locate those necessary parts, but it does take some research/time. I would like to come help you but it'd be good to locate the parts, what do your points contacts look like ? also you might be able to get another pair of springs from Ebay, etc. w/ a guarantee.

Good idea I didn't even think to look for a Ct forum!  And I looked on eBay just no luck:(  noob question but do our big bikes have a spark advancer? If so maybe I could find some parts searching something else.

I think you'll have to get the same springs for your bike because I'm sure it'll make a difference for when your advance comes open & you could try other Honda 70cc bikes in your search(CL70,C70 Passport, etc.) online because I imagine they're similar.
