Lighting problems... 2 separate issues... HELP!
« on: August 07, 2014, 07:59:44 PM »
OK gents... heres the deal.

73 CB350f, has been running fine, have tore down and rebuilt nearly entire bike over 2 yrs. (So, "I" have to take the blame for any major problems with wiring.)

Problem 1-
turn signal switch has had issues so i rebuilt it. Pretty simple switch, the sliding contact piece was pretty worn and burnt, replaced it. Cleaned 3 contact pins on the small switchboard and epoxied it to fix a crack. ALL works well... until I remove and reinstall the controls. Now only left ft signal works, right makes the headlight and running lights blink. All connections seem to be correct in hl bucket. (now thinking i may have pinched/shorted something in controls perhaps) On to the other issue...

Problem 2-
no oil or neutral light. replaced with LEDS mounted in gauge. Did oil/neutral/highbeam all the same. Highbeam works fine, have never got other 2 to work. LEDS work on their own and flash once when the main switch is shut off. Have run tests and both wires to sensors are good. Thought might be bad sensors..replaced the oil one, no change. I'm assuming the oil sensor breaks ground when pressurized to turn off bulb. Neutral switch, i have no idea... haven't really looked into that one yet.

Confused and tired, though some of you may have some ideas.
i did find this but wasn't a problem before...so...?

Ok, I know what it is. They mistakenly hooked up the old running light wires . Probably to the ground wire . The original front signals had 2 leads a piece coming out of them. One was solid orange, and a solid blue. Then there was a black with a blue ring, and a black with an orange ring. What you need to do is ground the new LED signals to the green wire in the bucket, then for the positive , use ONLY the solid org &blu. Tape off the black/blue black/org.

Problem 2: Neutral and Oil indicators share BLK in the sub harness. Have you verified this, and can you verify power on the BLK? HI uses BLU from switch housing which gets 12v from BLK.

From what you describe, you've got an issue with the BLK.

Problem 1: Right side turn uses Lt BL. Sheds like you tapped in BLU for headlight by mistake.

Refer to this color wiring diagram for clarity.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Wiring all three indicators the same is a bit odd. The hibeam one gets ground from a green wire and their +12V from the headlight hibeam power wire. The neutral and oil indicators get +12V from a black wire and ground through their respective switches. Note that LEDs have polarity - only light in one direction. Try using a "normal" filament bulb as a test: if theat works then your wiring is OK and you just have to reverse the LED connections. Since the LEDs flash on key off - probably from inductive kickback out of the ignition coils - they are OK.
I don't understand the flasher problem. The switch should turn front marker off and flash the turn signal on each activated side. Check the lamp functions so you know which wire is which filament (turn is brighter). Check the switch wires so you know which wires do what. There are two power sources (always on and flashing) and four outputs (two markers and two signals) The headlight power from the HL fuse (assuming you have the later 3 fuse 350 Four model) should go to the flasher switch ("always on" power) and also to the headlight hi/lo switch.
In centre position both markers should connect to always on power. In either flash position that side's marker should be disconnected and the signal connected to flashing power.
Once you identify each wire just hook them up the right way!
