One more time with the serial numbers
« on: August 08, 2014, 06:29:34 PM »
I just bought 2 CB550 engine/transmissions today.  Gonna pick them up tommorrow I hope, but I wanted to get a second opinion on the year of the engine.

Talked to the guy I was buying from and he had an actual honda service manual - and from his books he indicated they were both 1974 engines.  But looking at what is posted here: http://www.sohc4.net/cb550-model-guide/  It would appear they are from 1976

Serial numbers are 111xxxx and 107xxxx  If I'm not mistaken that's 1976.  So who's right?

The 107**** is a 76-K2 engine and the 111**** is a 76-F2 engine.

Okay, thank you.  I believe the person I was talking to was confusing the Bike S/N with the engine S/N.

Not that it makes any real difference, I just wanted to get my information straight.

The engines and frames were made in different facilities and are never matching (though it is conceivable).
The 76 K2 engine numbers start at 1067334, frames start at 1230001. 76 F2 engines start at 1109887 and the frames at 2000003
