Connecting rod options?
« on: August 21, 2014, 06:16:05 PM »
alright well took my crank in to the shop and its beyond usable so I need to send it out to get polished (or depending on how this auction goes just buy a new one from cyclex).

One of the rods is totally shot so I'm looking at new ones.

It seems my choice are cycle x rods (500-1000+ dollars)

Or aluminum ones from ebay which look kind of sketchy.

Are there any other retailers of new rods for our bikes that are reasonably priced?

Thanks!

As far as aftermarket rods go, cyclex super rods are about the cheapest you will find, $599 is a good price for performance rods, if you want state of the art get Carrillo or Falicon, they aren't cheap , around $1200, but they are good...

First off, how big is your motor, and how do you plan on using it?
How many rpm? And is that sustained, or short bursts..?
 Do you have a revlimiter?

motor is 836cc I primarily want to use it as a highway bike/ every day bike as the cb450 has shown that it is not too capable of doing that.

And no to the rev limiter

A lot of riders couldnt break an 836 with stock rods.
Even if you race off the odd light, given your stated use..I would not worry about it.
How hot a cam? Are the pistons high compression?

836.

I wouldn't worry about 'better' rods unless you want to just go lighter. That would get you those cheap aluminum rods or expensive Carrillo rods.

Stick with stock.

I've had a stock rod come out through the block on a 810 kitted bike Jerry, half way round a big sweeping corner, that was a change of underwear experience, 2 up as well... ;D :o  I put better rods in all performance enhanced 750 engines, insurance policy... ;D  The cycleX rods are lighter than stock, i'm using them in a 970cc engine, Carrillo's for the 1000 and RC rods for the 900 {888}.  Better to be safe than sorry... ;)

Unless you expect to do strip/track duty all the time. The fancy (Carrillo , Falicon) rods are just bragging rights on the street. For the price of those fancy rods you could easily have a set of stock rods polished, shot peened, balanced, and cryoed with F2 bolts. They will give you more rod then you will ever need for street/daily rider with plenty of room for bursts of excitement. You might even have enough $$ left over to cover the 836 kit.

That would just about cost as much as the  cycle x rods, they were the ones being recommended and they are great value..?  The others aren't necessary for this guys build. actually, no one said they were...
