What kind of Grease did Honda Use?
« on: August 10, 2014, 02:00:26 PM »
Trying to figure out what kind of grease Honda used in the steering stem bearings.
All I know is that it was Red in color and that 38 years later it is still "Grease" and not a petrified solid mass.

I have looked through the Shop manual and done a search on the forum here and through a general Google search and haven't figured it out.

Can anyone tell me what it was or a Honda part number?

Thanks,
Charlie

I've cleaned up a good bit of that grease to replace it with something else just because it was old.  I would think it's just a plain lithium fortified grease, because grease with Moly is always various colors of grey...depending on the percentage of moly in the formula.  Lithium grease comes in blue, red and white.  Perhaps there are others, but I'm not aware of them.

Muckinfuss,
OK, thanks, I'll start looking at lithium grease and see if I can find out more.

Just did some quick searching on Red Lithium Grease.
Looks like this may be what it was.
Characteristics of Red Lithium Grease are High temperature, and extreme pressure.
Good for wheel, roller and ball bearings.  Good for boat trailers. chassis and fleet applications.

Sounds like this really might be it.

Thanks for the help.

This may fall into the topic of TooMuchInformation: but it should show you that 1. red grease is almost always Lithium and 2. mixing grease types can be a problem.  Start clean when in doubt.
