I may have hit the jackpot
« on: August 10, 2014, 06:07:19 PM »
I often see folks picking up cheap bikes that need little to no attention.  I always lament how I've never been fortunate enough to find anything like that.  Today, I was at a guy's house that I haven't seen for a good couple years.  He told me he still had that bike he was asking me  how to get a title for.  I hardly remembered him asking me.

As it turns out, he never did get the title and it has sat in his garage ever since.  He says to come in the garage and look at it.  In the corner of his garage sits an '82 Suzuki GS650 with 2900 miles.  I couldn't see very well but it didn't look like it had a scratch on it.  He asks me if I wanted it, just take it off his hands.

Apparently, someone won a storage unit auction and this was in there.  He decided trying to get a title is too much hassle.  I'm going over there next week with my flatbed to pick it up.  Even if I can't get a title, it would be well worth the parts.  He' says he's ridden it.

I know... Pictures or it didn't happen.  I'll take some when I pick it up.

Is it a G or GL model.  Are titles a hassle down there ? Can't beat free.

Well, jackpot may have been too strong a word.  It was worse than it looked BUT it's not rusty.  Under 3000 miles and the inside of the tank looks real nice too.  Exhaust solid.  It smells...  Like a storage shed that had rats or mice or something but I guess that's to be expected because that's where it was found.  Full tool kit.

The other thing I dragged along with it is a real gem  ::)

I actually gave him $100 as a good faith gesture.

For some reason those honda rebels seem to fetch $1500 or more in any kind of shape.  I guess they are known as a good starter cycle or are a size 14 y.o.'s can ride. Not real sure, but you never see them super cheap.

fmc,
Go for a VT. title  8) Check it out online. You can get one even if you're not a resident of VT. ! I did and 'No Prob.' The smaller bikes below 300cc that is... The bigger ones,I think you might just have to say you paid more for it so they can deal w/ the 'extra tax' or something.
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.

I'm definitely going to title that 650.  I think I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and use that guy in utah that goes by impala66k on ebay.  I mentioned him a few times in some other title threads.

*edit*  The front wheel of that old rebel was so stuck, we had to put it on a creeper and wheel it to my trailer.  I think I may be able to salvage the motor.  I'm going to advertise it on BHam CL and see if anyone wants it.  I'll drag it to Barber's if so.

Good pickup mate, those old GS Suzy's are great bikes, I've had several. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Do you think the engine will turn over on that Honda CB250 Custom ?

I'm cautiously optimistic on the motor.  I put it in 5th gear when I had it on my trailer and it seemed to roll.  I didn't go far though, I'm going to try to crank it this week.  And I heard back from impala66k, he doesn't do titles anymore I guess.  He recommended and outfit in Vt though, probably the same one you describe.

Terry,

I finally found a bike that hasn't had enough time to be abused by a PO.  That smell though...  and the thought of rodents could have been carrying out there fecal and urinary shenanigans on it has me grossed out.  I'll have to look at the air filter and see if they nested in there.

Seems like a lot of old bikes I buy has a mouse nest in the airbox and always interesting to see what shoots out the exhaust pipes. Mouse urine is highly corrosive, always a good idea to seal the ends of exhaust pipes for storage.
Think you may be impressed with the straight line performance of the 650, has more ponies on tap than a CB750.
