As for a pipe, tapered pipes basically work better than straight tube designs unless you run a big engine and or use a lot of nitrous. At that point you need real large primary tubes. I remember Vance and Hines ran an X pipe real early in their Pro Stock career.

Thanks for jumpin' in,Mike. I'm not familiar with the term "tapered pipe". Does this refer to the header? And would a stock header fall into this category? Thanks :)

I don't think we'll be seeing too many of dem fancy titanium tapered pipes on our ol' bangers! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Yesterday there was a thread about changing the primary drive rubbers. I resisted the temptation to add that to my list of things to do/spend on this bike. I am now going to resist the temptation to have tapered titanium pipes made. Grrrrrrrrrgggghhh....Must RESIST, muuuuuuust reeeeeesiiiisssst..... :D :D :D :D

Still am wondering if I can use the stock header, as long as I use a less restrictive exhaust, and still expect good results from this 836 engine w/hot cam, ported head, lightened crank, etc..etc..... ??? ??? ??? Or do I need the larger Kerker or Mac header to let this engine do it's thing. The question has probably been answered and I'm too dense to get it :P :P :D :D

The Kerker with the 1.5" does a pretty good job. The 2" is boss. ;) :D

Very nice Mike, but I'll have to stick with my old "Peter Allen" (no relation to the dead gay singer) race pipe with the tuned length headers, they're slightly larger OD than the OEM pipes, not that it will matter all that much, I can't afford another set anyway, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Trouble is getting the 2" diameter Kerker exhaust to fit the 1 1/4" stock collector :P   My whole reason for wanting to use the stock header is it's the only one I've got that will mount to the head(with studs, 77-78 style) besides the X-pipe I have. I have to remove the centerstand in order to use the X-pipe. While I'm breaking in the bike/motor I will want to centerstand it a few times in order to change oil, tires and whatever else I haven't forseen. For this reason I have been wondering wether just adding a less restrictive exhaust to the stock header is enough. As I stated in the beginning I have been told both "no" and "yes" as to whether the stock header(not the exhaust can) will allow the 836 to "breathe" sufficiently.

Then it hit me(thanks Mike). I have two "spigot style" Kerkers hanging in the garage. One looks to be the "2 inch boss". The studs were removed from my head for porting and have yet to be replaced. I can use the "spigot" kerker for break-in, THEN add the studs for mounting the X-pipe. Yes, I am that dense sometimes :D :D :D :D :D

I still want to know about the stock header though ??? ???

Let me know if you need a 1-1/4" to 2" adapter sleeve made Sean, and I'll chuck it in the box with your cooler! Cheers, Terry. ;D
