PD carb choke issue 1978 CB550 help!
« on: August 22, 2014, 03:50:17 AM »
Ha, tried to get as many keywords in there as I could.

So my problem is that when I pull the choke knob, the choke flaps don't move. The cable is connected properly, and the housing is in the stop above the choke arm (the arm which holds the cable end) which means the arm is pulled upwards when the knob is pulled. However, like I said, the flaps don't move.

HOWEVER. When I use my finger to push the arm forward instead of up, the choke flaps move. I don't understand. It almost seems like the housing stop should be positioned in front of the arm instead of above. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Ha.

If something was assembled wrong I think good pictures would help. Did this always happen or something cause this? Is the knob really easy to pull? Like it's not actuating anything?

I have a '78 550 and I don't quite see what you're saying.

Are the carbs on the bike? How do you know that the butterfly valves aren't working? You're looking in them through the intake side?

have you visually verified that the arm is in fact moving when you pull the choke knob out? Because if your second statement is accurate but pulling the know doesn't move the arm then I would say you have a choke cable that is broken in the housing.

If you are pushing forward on the big bell crank on the top. You are moving the slides. Not the choke. The choke linkage is on the bottom middle with a lever arrangement that can only be pulled upward unless it is installed incorrectly. You should be able to move the choke linkage with your pinky, The throttle crank will require hard thumb pressure.
Were these carbs recently rebuilt?
Is the spring over the linkage arm?

Ok. Choke cable is intact. This video clears up my explanation of what is happening. You can see the choke flaps move or lack there of if you watch closely.

Hard to tell what's going on in that video.  That tiny spring (there are a couple in that area) but one of them is the only thing that connects the two sides.  Basically the part you connect to is connected to right side rod via the spring, then when that moves, it makes contact with and moves the left side.  The reason it works when you push it cause you are physically pushing the rods.  You can pull up on that choke cable all day but unless it's connected to anything nothing is going to happen.

You have probably had them apart at some time, if that is the case, always put the choke flaps on LAST.  This way everything is lined up where it's going to be and you don't get binding of the flaps.  This is something you're going to have to address also.

Here you can see the expanded view of how the components go together.  Note how where the choke cable connects is not the rod the choke flaps are connected to--they will move independently of each other.  Also note the spring orientation on the right.

Second picture shows proper assembly.

Spring was on backwards. Ha ha. Thanks a lot, dude. Bike is new to me, so it must have been the previous owner.
