The only real "caution" I'd give you is; if you buy a used 650 cam, make sure you get the original rockers with it, numbered in series for placement. Many of these cams are worn, and to install a worn cam against rockers that are not original to the cam (with a different wear pattern) will result in lots of chatter and poor valve train performance.

I recently bought a 650 cam for a 550 and discovered it to have more than .03 of face wear on several lobes. Usable for a down and dirty rebuild if I had the original rockers. But not even close to usable for a performance upgrade. So it's off to be hard welded ($400). Not a great outcome for me.

Damn that's some valuable information Cal! I never read that. Now I'm worried about my 650 cam in my build.

Great info Cal, now I wonder about say new old stock camshaft with used rockers.  Or have to be both new shaft and rockers?

2 of my 550s are running used 650 camshafts and each has about at least 7000 miles on it already.  Still running strong. Daily rider, long commute and all.

I wouldn't think the shafts are so much the issue, but the rockers would be necessary to me. That way, the wear pattern is matched. Again, for a daily rider, down and dirty build, it's probably just fine. But, if you're blowing out the bore and adding some real HP, hard weld is probably my only path in the future. Just works out safer to me.

Trust me, hard weld and machining cams is a service that we send off for. MegaCycle, webcam, delta, places like that. You aren't going to do this at home with a MillerMatic and a bench grinder :-)

Ahhh gotcha.  Anyone know the best way to remove that corrosion on the covers?  I think they will clean up nicely!

Aircraft stripper. Follow directions on the can...... Then I use a fine brass wire wheel on my bench grinder. Follow it up with 3 stage polish.

Check out Harsh's current thread building a 350 for his wife. Recent pages talk about the steps he goes through.

For removing the oxidation, fine glass bead blasting works fantastic too if you have access to a cabinet. Then, proceed with polishing steps.

If you start needing money and have an extra front fender that is in good shape, shoot me a message.  I'll gladly buy one from you.

I'm looking for a good front fender for the restoration my son is doing on a 78 750K (I'm assuming the 750 and 550 fenders are the same....someone please correct me if that isn't the case).

Pretty common part though I'm not sure about the 750 being the same size.  Someone on here should be able to help you no problem,  Best advice I can tell ya is get a build thread going and don't look back.

Tyler - any chance either of your bikes came with a complete airbox assembly? If like to borrow one for a project to recreate it out of carbon fiber. But I need the whole assembly to understand how to re-mold it.

Tyler - any chance either of your bikes came with a complete airbox assembly? If like to borrow one for a project to recreate it out of carbon fiber. But I need the whole assembly to understand how to re-mold it.

YES!!  That would be sweet, especially if you can make it bigger and for other carbs!!

A bigger airbox w/ more plenum, then put a turbo on her Cal.  ;D
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.
