You can fit the 77 engine complete and use the early manifolds/rubbers/carbs/airbox, just jet for a 550(which if they are 74 carbs they should be already)

So use the 77 block, but the 74 manifold and carbs? That engine only has 10k on it that's why i prefer to use it instead of the 74

Yup, the main lump is the same all the way through the 550 and will fit a 500 as long as you use the RH rear mounting plate from the 550 as the clutch cable mounts on it

Sorry its been awhile guys. Been crazy around here lately. To summarize, In the past month I have survived a car accident, moved my family from Tennessee to Maryland, Started my Career and became a Uncle!  But I'm back on track now and anxious to get going!  Sanded and painted the frame gloss black and letting that sit for a while to really cure.

Thanks man!  My career is great. The Marina where I work hired me full time with benefits and a very nice salary for a 20 year old, they also plan to help me financially towards Marine Trade School where I hope to become a Marine Mechanic and then come back and work for the Marina in the Mechanic shop, like you said lots of changes!! ;D ;D

Marine mechanic sounds Good  8)  ;)
The boaters want to be sure they can get back to shore under their own steam;pretty tough to 'get out and push' when they're 'dead in the water'  ;D I guess w/ road vehicles that's an option but not w/ boats  :o  :)

Made a little progress now, I tore into the parts bike, mostly just for the front turn signals, they are perfect.  Does anyone know if the will work on the 500 forks?  Wondering about clearance issues with the fork gators.  Also removing valuable parts to be stored for now.  Switches are good if anyone needs them!  MY hopes are to have a engine back in the frame by the ned of december.

You will need to make adaptors to fit the big blinkers to an early bike and you cant use those ears with gaitors sorry

Back from the dead I suppose, the holidays are over and now resumes the project! My plan was to have the engine back in by now, but that didn't happen. It is however at the machine shop getting the top end clean and surfaced! Can't wait to see what it looks like! I think I'm going To buy a full engine gasket kit and new black pucks as well. Are the rumors that you can still order piston rings from honda true? I'm in need of a new set

Hi Tyler,
How was your Christmas ? Did you get any tools or parts for your Honda project here ? What engine did you finally decide to  rebuild the 500 or 550 ?

Hey man good to talk to you again! I'm rebuilding the 74 550 motor to transplant into the 500 frame for myself. Then I'll throw the 77 550 motor from the parts bike in the 74 and sell that in the spring!  Christmas was great this year! I got a few parts for my off-road\expedition military trailer I am building and a unnecessary amount of LED lights for my truck. But as far as bike projects go I got a new Dremel, plugs, grips, and riding gloves. Somewhat little things for the project nothing to specific in fear of someone ordering the wrong part.  And site note I sold my trusty 350f right before the holidays. Didn't really want to but the price was right and I'm trying to step up bigger!

Tyler,
I checked on a good online oem Honda parts supplier and found that they only have the 'STD.' size oem Honda piston rings available,if you want Honda originals.

Tyler,it would help if you know what oversize 'size' rings you need(STD. won't do?) or if you specify oem Honda or aftermarket.

Planning on reusing the old Pistons so I guess stock size would work, no oversizing needed since I'm not honing out the jugs

Tyler,
The supplier that I looked at(and have used before) is motogrid.com and I looked up the CB550K1 and they show 'std.' stock size piston rings available for your bike. When you replace rings the machine shop will have to 'Glaze break'/lightly hone each cylinder so the new rings will 'seat/break-in'.What does the machine shop say about the condition of the 4) cylinder walls ?
any pics of them or if they have any water damage, etc. ?

The shop said that they looked fine, I have some pics somewhere in this thread, but I don't remember them having any water damage , so maybe a noob question, but how do I figure out what size rings if the shop is going to glaze each cylinder anyway??

Tyler,
Have them measure/mic. each cylinder and compare the measurement they get to the specification in the oem Honda Shop Manual. There's a minimum and maximum size for the i.d. of the cylinders..and if you are between that, you're 'good to go',but they need to measure them before they lightly hone/'glaze break' the cylinders. The light honing/'glaze breaking' is only supposed to remove a tiny bit of metal so the new rings will have the rough surface of the cylinder walls to rub against during 'Break-in'.  ;)
