Ill figure out the wiring tomorrow an get back you guys, thanks for the input. I did finally get my tank and side covers back, Painter has had them done for 2 weeks but never called me! Anyway I like the finish very much, He filled the dents wonderfully and reshaped the tank perfectly.  The coat may be darker then most Planet Blue Metallic I have seen but I like it.  I Installed a new chrome stripe around the edge but actually need to pick up some more.

I then attempted to install my 550 Decals from 78-Orbs on the tank and failed miserably. Im going to try to use a little heat to work out these wrinkles but If I have to buy another set I will. Its going to drive me crazy.

Paint came out great, that blue looks phenomenal! Sorry to see your decal troubles. Are Orbs decals able to be put on wet? I know some can and some can't. The ones you can wet give you a little extra time to set up and work out any wrinkles, you just have to let them dry out before clearing over.

Did he give you any instructions for them?

Those decals are a major pain in the ass.  I had the water-applied ones -- they did not have the black orb in the middle (it was painted black) with the decal overlapping the black and blue.

I'm not sure if these could be put on wet. But there wasn't any instruction either way. There not terribly expensive so I may just try again. For now they will have to do

Some vinyl installation procedures state that the tank can be sprayed with water with a drop of liquid dishsoap in it.

Don't let it bother you too much, I've failed at it too.

That's how I did mine on my 500, spray bottle and soap, then worked out any bubbles/folds. They're easy to screw up though, don't be too hard on yourself.

The paint turned out fantastic. You can always order a new set of decals and try again. I would remove these before they become a bear to get off later.

Gas cap from the old 500 tank that was damaged in the fire, used a little steel wool and it clean up decently. Pin set from HondaMan worked out great and went on no issue, Ordered a new seal.

Since I couldn't resist throwing them on just to see, Here is a little sneak peek. Brakes next, Having some trouble getting the piston to seat all the way in the caliper though. Keeps wanting to slide forward against the pad making it impossible to bolt up to the arm without seizing the rotor completely. Haven't started on the rear yet but I will figure it all out.

Looking good Tyler! You'll be riding in no time. What's the deal with the caliper? Are the piston and seal new? Did you clean out the caliper and seal groove really good? Does the piston have any pitting? If the seal's no good the piston won't fully retract when you brake and it will keep going further and further out each time you use it until it seizes.

Nice, I thought that the decal had exceptional repositioning properties because of the 3M wrap it is made from.  Ask the guy that sells them for advice and if it can't be fixed thrn spring for a new set. Does heat allow stretching or shrinking?
RC airplane irons have socks of soft cotton over them or Teflon coatings. Someone with that could loan you one. Or buy one for about 30.

Bike looks great but, it sucks that they didn't match the color better. Would be nice to have a small touchup can of paint for any scratches in the future.  Doesn't work with what they spray as the pot life is too short.

Look forward to seeing more as you finish it up.

BTW, a dental or mechanics mirror is helpful for inspection of yhe caliper body sealvs groove. A dremel with a brass brush works great for cleaning the groove. The square corners of the groove are the challenge. It pushes the seal out and can cause the piston to push out.

What kind of piston do you have?  Stock chromed steel or phenolic?

Hard to make that judgement given your looking at a photo on a computer screen. In person, I'd suspect the color really looks fantastic and unless they're side-by-side, it would be very difficult to say it's not "right". Or, it could be off enough that a snooty purist would say, "that's aftermarket and not even close!". But I doubt that was his intended buyer anyway...

Not snapping at you, Dave, just pointing out some possibilities. It's an awfully good result for a "kid" in his basement who less than 2 years ago was asking, "what's this thing do?"

Well done, Tyler, really well done!

I was ignorant of where you came from as I recently found the thread.  The Blue is pretty but, not quite as close a match you indicated, I wasn't critical of the work as much the lack of the match being quite right. It isn't fun when you ask for one thing and get something close.  A friend who was older, Paul, had a Chevelle since he was a teenager and the car had gone to college with him and he & his wife had good memories in the car. Paul's cousin in GA was going to re-paint it for him. My brother and I and Paul wet sanded it before he left to take it down one weekend. The painted it but there were two blues that year and hisccousin somehow got the wrong color mixed after Paul had provided the number. It looked good but, it wasn't the same.  Paul ended up having his cousin reshoot it about a month later the lighter blue.

Congrats on the accomplishments and learning and building a great looking bike.

Basically, repainting these candy colors is a total crapshoot.  Very few painters today understand what is really involved, and even the ones who do, can make no guarantees that it will match....candy is going to be pretty no matter what. :)

Absolutely. In this case it was a friend of my dads who owns a Paint Shop. I supplied the VMR paint and he sprayed and re shaped the tank for me for 100$. Needless to say I'm very pleased with the result.

They can't guarantee a match for numerous reasons. The paint products today are very different from 40 years ago. You have no idea the pressure or technique used to apply the paint. The formula is close, but not exact. And a hand sprayed tank today will always differ from a 40 year stock tank. It's not that they're ignorant or incompetent, it's simply a matter of a legacy "family recipe" that you're trying to duplicate.

But, if you paint all three pieces together now, they'll match each other and look stunning. And I bet Tyler's do just that! For $100, they probably look like a $1,000,000 paint job!

Another thing to consider with a candy paint job:  at least in our case, a layer of silver paint was applied first.  Then the gold (or blue or whatever color) is applied on top of that.  The more coats of your color that are applied on top of the silver, the less bright your finished result will be.  In other words, you can affect the paint's darkness by applying more coats.

Another point specifically about reds:
When we bought our house about 17 years ago, we painted the kitchen and one other very large area a Tahitian red color.  The guy at Home Depot handed me a can of Dark Gray primer and told me to use that instead of the usual white-based primer.  He told me to use the dark gray as a base or else I'd have to pretty much double the number of coats of red to get the same result.

So I bought the dark gray and put down 2 heavy coats of paint and the color was exactly what we wanted.  Well, it just so turns out that Kelli's aunt & uncle were having almost the exact same color painted in their kitchen around the same time.  When we went to their home about a month later, I commented that our kitchens were now the same color.  Kelli's uncle Dave commented, "Yeah, we felt bad because the painter did it as a fixed price bid and did a really good job.  But it took the poor fellow 12 coats of paint to get the red color just right.  The first 3 coats, it looked Pepto Bismo pink."  I just looked at Kelli and we both smiled because we knew that fellow from Home Depot had saved us some trouble.

So, if you're going to paint a bike a red color, the darker gray primer or base coat will make it easier to get the shade of darker red you're going for.

Using tinted primer for Red is a must. Paint is clear with tint added. You can not get enough tint into paint to produce a true red unless the base color is already tinted. Priming with dark grey or red tinted primer is a more accurate outcome.

Well today I first I replaced the Entire break piston after finding major pitting and corrosion on it, I also replaced the seal with a Genuine Honda Seal.  After getting the lines and caliper primed up the breaks work, but leak out of the bottom of the caliper :( and since thats happening it keeps loosing pressure and have to be pumped up again for the breaks to work. SO what do I do about that leak?  Could the seal not be " Sealing" correctly?

Secondly I installed a new battery and main fuse and blade holder. Electrics works great all except the rear brake lights when the handle is pulled, the peddle activated brake light works just fine though.  The starter button doesn't work right now either. Thinking it could be from the clutch cancel not being hooked up since I'm using a 500 clutch housing with no wires for a clutch cancel switch......Thoughts on how to fix this?

Lastly I went to start her up for the first time and that when all Hell Broke Loose and the day got even worse. only running on 2 and 3 cylinders, the points are dialed in so it may be related to the carbs.....Remember a few posts back how I said I wasn't really happy with my carb rebuild done by a local shop here in town? Well where should I start on that? How about the leaking float bowl overflows?? or the float bowls not sealing onto the carbs??, or my favorite, how about how the shop that rebuilt them never reinstalled the two small black fuel lines between the carbs that now were leaking all over the place? Not happy what so ever. Sorry about the Rant just was expecting much more out of today.

I uploaded a very crappy short video I took today to my junk YouTube Account so you guys can see what Im dealing with here. In the video listen for a knock/Tick.  Anyone have any thoughts about what that may be? Not feeling great about that either.

Brake leak: quite possible that you didn't get the deal groove fully cleaned. Or, possibly you knocked the seal and fluid is leaking past.

Brake switch: check that the Gr/Yllw wire from the front brake switch has continuity to the rear light connection.

Horn: there should be power delivered to the horn form the harness, the Lt Gr wire from the LH switch provides the ground. The Clutch "cancel" has nothing to do with this function. Check for presence of 12v at the horn (Br or BLK) and then continuity to ground on Lt Gr.

Running on cylinders 2&3: quite likely an issue with left side coil that serves cylinders 1/4. Either points, condenser, or small possibility that the coil is an issue. My money is on your condensers.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis
