Glutton for Punishment, or...talk me out of this CB500
« on: August 14, 2014, 06:29:16 am »
I was meeting some friends for a ride last month. I was on my CB550 and stopped at Bojangle's for a biscuit. A fellow came up to me and struck up a conversation about the bike and mentioned that he has a '73 CB500. He parked it in 1983 when his daughter was born.

I took his name and number and kind of forgot about it.

Fast forward about 6 weeks. I have a friend that learned to ride last year. She's been bombing around on a clapped out CB175. She's a quick learner, a really good rider and loves to wrench. I thought about the CB500, so I called the guy.
After playing phone tag for a bit, I met him to look at it.

It's been in a shed, but not a very good one. It's complete, with 4-2 exhaust. It ran and ran great when he parked it......in 1983. He bought it in 1975 and has a title.....somewhere....

The engine is stuck. Could be fatal, could be easy. The carbs actually move, but who knows what the jet holders, etc., look like.
I tried to open the gas cap and  the top of the gas tank pops like a beer can. Odd, because the sides and bottom are solid. Shame, because it looks like the paint would clean up.

This bike would need a LOT of attention. We have time and I have PILES of spare parts for this bike. Other than tires/rubber, the big ticket items would be carb rebuild and a tank. And that's IF we can get the engine unstuck.

Here's the kicker: He was practically BEGGING me to make an offer. He knows he screwed up by letting it sit and freely admits he'll never do anything with it.
I think I can get it for $50-75. Maybe offer him $100 if he'll help with DMV paperwork to get the title (which he mentioned already, without me prodding).

IF we can get the engine loose, and IF the carbs are salvageable, I have everything minus a good tank to make this bike a runner. If not, I can part it out and quadruple my money.
BUT....BUT..... I just sold two bikes and a project. I'm trying really hard to simplify. I think it would be fun to help a friend (and she's ALL about wrenching and sharing in the costs. The thought of her building her own bike is a dream for her). There wouldn't really be a time frame on it. I have spares and garage space.
Am I stupid for even considering it?

(excuse the poor cell phone pic. It was hard to get a good shot of it)

Do it! Turn a pigs ear into a silk purse! Un sticking that engine "could" be easy, might need boring.

I've started with a LOT worse and gotten it all done with far fewer spares.

For that kind of money I would buy it and worry about what to do with it later. Bikes that cheap don't come along everyday and sounds like a no hassle deal. If it was a total stinker you could recoup the investment pretty easily.

I'd take it in a heartbeat, stuck engine or not.

That title could be an issue, its a real PIA to retitle - but that's just because I hate dealing with the DMV

I bought a cb550 in WAY worse shape a few weeks ago for $100 and already made that back in selling parts off it locally. That was just a single side cover and rocker cover! :) Do it or you will regret it. Such a no brainer!

Last weekend I paid $200 for a parts bike in far worse shape. It was still a great deal because I got all the parts that I needed plus a low mileage spare engine. I wouldn't hesitate to buy that bike. I may be dirty but it looks complete and an engine stuck from sitting inside a shed is usually easy to free up. Its the ones left outside that are usually done for.

When I finally met the guy last Tuesday, after a few days of phone tag, he seemed EAGER for me to get it. However, I wasn't home when he called so I didn't have my "mad money" cash with me or the van.

Called today and offered $100 and I'd file for the title. Now he's back pedaling, but still saying he can file for the title.
THAT'S why I like being prepared when I go look at a bike.

We're supposed to touch base Monday. I still think I can get it cheap and he may be willing to help with the title.
I offered to do the legwork and pay the DMV fees. We'll see how it goes Monday, I guess....

I don't think SERIOUS money. I swear, I got the vibe last Tuesday I could have gotten it for $50-75 if I had been prepared.

I'd be willing to go $200-300 for it IF he can supply a title.

A title is worth $200, it will cost at least that much to obtain one [plus all the leg work]

I agree. Go get it.  Pour a healthy dose of Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder spark plug hole, let it sit a week or two and SLOWLY work the kick starter and I'm betting money she'll free up on you!
