Travelling to New Orleans
« on: August 12, 2014, 04:15:59 PM »
Hello there,
I am reaching out to all of you for suggestions,
I will be in new orleans at the end of september to present at a conference, and I would like to add few days of exploring to it. Ideally I am looking to rent a motorcycle and touring the south for 3-4 days. I did not find any rental companies in my quick search on the web, so I was hoping someone could point me to the right direction.
Any suggestion on what are the must see things in the area?
thank you all!

New Orleans is a great City, great food, music and fun.  Spend a couple nights bar hoppin in the French Quarter, no vehicle needed, you'll be drinkin a lot!

Then rent a CB550F (Cal posted link above) and cruise to the beautiful beaches in Gulfport, only about 80 miles.

My only rental experience in the region was with Sport Ryder, out of Dallas in 2008. Based on that experience, I would recommend them highly

I personally love the bayou area from Lafayette south. I love speaking with Acadiens, I start talking slower and hold vowels longer after about a minute. If you have a chance, and its still happening, take the boat tour of the catastrophe at Lake Peigneur. Hope the presentation goes well, and have fun afterwards!

+1.  Do NOT miss Bourbon street.  The casinos in Biloxi aren't far away either...

Bob Dylan wrote about New Orleans,  I think he spent some time tooling around on a Triumph there.  Chronicles 1 might be a good read befroe your trip.

I visited New Orleans in the early 90s with a couple of friends. Such an atmospheric place. The French Quarter and Bourbon Street blew me away. I remember a lot of the bars there charging quite a lot to go inside - more than we could afford on our budget anyway. But nearly all of these had top class live jazz going on inside. I don't even care for Jazz, but I guarantee it draws you in once you're there. Heck, even the buskers there made some of the better acts in the UK look amateurish. I particularly recall one little fella, about seven or eight years old, who tap-danced on the street corner using bottletops stuck to the soles of his sneakers. He did well out of us. I also remember going into a deli and upon leaving becoming aware of a growing throng of little kids following behind - they wanted our cake, which of course we gave them and it was a pleasure to see their beaming faces. Another thing we did while we were there was a river trip on a paddle steamer, with a gospel choir on deck. I was struck by the colour of the Mississippi - red-orange from all the rusting hulks moored across the river. Always swore I'd go back one day for the Mardi Gras, hasn't happened yet.

I'm envious, enjoy!

You'll notice none of their stories recount how many nights in jail they spent there after their debauchery...
