Motogadget m-unit help!!!
« on: August 23, 2014, 05:19:02 PM »
Hey everyone. I am looking for help with my current build. I am trying to install a motogadet m-unit on my 1975 honda cb550f. Right now I have brake, turn signals, and lights all working. I am trying to get the starter button and kill switch set up. Also I am running a dyna s ignition system in case this may change things. I know the solenoid works as I have connected positive and negative and it turns the crank, but set up with the bottom nothing happens. Ps. I know very little about wiring so treat me like a noob.

Thanks!

I am using the posh factory controls. A push bottom for the start and push button for the kill switch (the kill push button is a closed circuit that opened once bushed). I can make the wiring whatever colour really.

I have the starter button wire leading to m-unit, and a second wire running to clean ground.
On the dyna s I have blue to blue, yellow to yellow, and red spliced into the black eom wires of the coils. Solenoid is confusing the hell out of me. Also don't no if I need the eom relay for the starter either. This is the point which I am lost.

Hey cal. I am using a aftermarket rec/reg (oregan moto sohc version) my questions now based on what you have stated are the red and black wires from the rec/reg. the black should go the the brake and headlight correct? Where else would it go?

The red wire, does it go to lock output (aux)?

Also where does the black wire of the coils go into the m-unit?

Sorry for all the questions, but I figure others may have or will have the same.

Thanks!

Cal, it all worked! Only thing I need to do is run a thicker gauge wire from the m-unit to the starter solenoid. Also, I had to ground out the green red wire. Other than that it was all perfect! Thank you so much buddy!

It's the red wire gauge I need to increase. If anyone is looking at installing the posh factory control here is what I have learned. Used liquid electrical tape to seal the connections from wire to switch! Especially if the clipons or handle bars have a narrow inner diameter. Other than that it was straight forward thanks to cal. Just got to defuse the tank and then I can synch the carbs. And then I will post the full build.

Now that I have learned these few lessons it is actually amazing how simple the m-unit was to install! Anyone looking to upgrade electrical or upen up that triangular centre in their cafe I would highly recommend it!... Coming from a newb!

I can see that being a great idea. Probably essential since I'm up in canada and the salt on the roads would probably give a beating to open electronic connections.

Cal, I'm sitting back enjoying this with an 18 yr Scotch in one hand and a Cohiba in another.  Cheers, Carny....kind of an inside joke.

This last weekend was a cool Moto weekend at Ian Halcott's ranch near San Luis Obispo. Welding, wrenching, playing soccer pick-up games daily, riding twisties and consuming steaks, carne asada, Angels Envy Bourbon, Cazadores margaritas, Pacificos and moonshine!

I apologize for bringing up a old post, but I just got a m-unit for my 78 cb550k.

Starting with the key switch- I have 2 brown/white wires, a red and a black wire.  Black goes to lock? does red go to aux? Can I remove the 2 brown?

I am using the stock start button for the time being- the yellow/red goes to start out? What do I need to do with the green/red?

I just need a good, free, electronic drawing package to document the 3 different layouts: 750/550 stock controls with new R/R, 750/550 with m-button, and of course these with m-LOCK/aftermarket controls.

May not be everything you need, Cal, but Google Sketchup is free and is a pretty good 3D modeling tool.

I had the same question actually... from the coils, it seems like the yellow wire and blue wire would connect to their counterparts on the condensers? And the white/black wires on the coils connect to AUX?

Thanks for all your advice in this thread, Cal. I skipped the kill switch and just push the start button twice while the engine is running to cut power. Really nice feature. Here is how I wired up my components in case it's helpful (attachment)

hello,

i'm owner of a cb 500 an also used a motogadget m-unit with universal reg-rec .

I first followed the instructions to connect the sense + wire to lock ( in ) but I had a bad charge ; secondly I ' ve tried it to connect it to the aux output and al troubles seem gone.

It was a small drop of power ( +- 0.3 V / trip ) but now I ' ve measured 12.9 volts after a ride , so I don't thinks thas bad , strange the connection between lock and aux ...

This answer is just to hear if anyone else had the same issue ...

exept from the generator ( dynamo ) is everything new .

kind regards from Belgium ....

Thanks for the info  !

Yes it's a lithium battery and I can check also the health of it with a charge system, it only needed less than a hour to be full charged, a week ago it  discharged before a new charge session started and the process took a whole night.
But I'm happy to get rid of the old reg rec units, real antique but they still did the job.... I already have questions about the right sided clutch ln my cb 500 , the gasket between engine and clutch cover don't match at the base side. Engine gearbox is flat and clutch cover has a small curve.

AUX feeds the ignition coils. You can either run AUX to the KILL switch, then to the coils, and YELLOW/RED from start button to START input. START output to solenoid. The BLUE and YELLOW from the points plate or electronic ignition run to the coils as stock.

I thought that the coil wires (not blue & yellow) run to IGNITION on the m.Unit?? That's what you told me before.
Thankful for everyone on this forum. Grateful to continue to learn so much.

Sheesh. You don’t pay much attention to what you are told. The coils have 2 separate wire sources: 1 is actual switched power (from the mUnit) nd the other is the from the ignition plate (blue or yellow as signals for the coil to fire the spark plug).

AUX feeds 12v power to the coil. Blue/Yellow tell the coil to fire the plug in time with the valve train and ignition.

I do pay attention to what you say, which is why I'm confused. I'm trying to learn from you because you're more knowledgeable than me. You say "COIL to AUX in one post, but then I read you saying COIL to IGN On another.

I mean no disrespect AT ALL; I just want to know which one is correct.
Thankful for everyone on this forum. Grateful to continue to learn so much.
