i like the way my bike looks.--now with pics
« on: September 27, 2006, 07:06:07 AM »
well, it's close enough for rock and roll, as they say.

spray can job and a quickly built seat, but it looks pretty nice for a hack like me.
pics to come monday, as i don't want to spoil it for my michigan homies.....plus, i don't have any yet.

yeah, i didn't ride in today due to rain threat--which is currently proving to be correct.
by then it should be nicely cured and i'll wax it first.

Looking forward to seeing your bike ….I used a rattle can on my side panels and I’m also pleased with the finished paint job.

pics as promissed.

disclaimers:
no, i'm not a "builder"
i'm a hack, but i like where it's headed.  have learned more in the last few months than i can describe.  plus, it runs now.

more or less a proof of concept to see what i though of the paint scheme.  plan to add kneepads and a badge to the tank, the side covers need a black border, eventually i'll rebuild the MC and loose the rag, yeah that's a little gas cause i forgot to switch the petcock off this morning......stock wheels were black then right?....the seat pad was built in under an hour for about $10 to see how it would work....gonna do the same thing but with leather and proper foam.

that's all i can think of now.

Very nice! Not too bad for a self described "hack". There should be more hacks and less James, Teutuls, Lane please.

fuel.
it's in the disclaimer, forgot to shut off the petcock while shivering and trying to get my helmet off this morning.

really, i think the bit of shop-rag around the MC to catch the ocassional drops of DOT3 is what gives it character.

looks good for the time and money you spent. I think it would take me 10 hours to get that seat, not 10 minutes :) I really like the numbers too.

You have created a good looking ride, not to be a builder. I especially like the paint
scheme. Also, I have to compliment you on the seat. If you did that in such a short time,
I'd like to see what you can do with some time on your hands. You seem to have a knack
for adding personalized touches that work well with the bike. Congratulations!

thank you all for the compliments...much appreciated.  when i look at some of the stuff done here, it really makes me feel liek a hack but i'm happy as i've met my most of my goals on it:
  1) to make it run
  2) to make it run right
  3) then to get it moving in the direction i waned cosmetically while never having it off the road for more than a day.
  4) crack the ton....only got it to 91.9 so far, but that was before i really tore into it.

over the winter, i plan to setup a spray booth in my basement and do a proper paint job.  at that time, i'll use my newfound upolstery skills and better materials to make a proper seat as well.

curious, i've had one guy mention he'd get rid of the silver on the sides of the tank.  i plan to put rubber knee pads and some sort of 400F badge/sticker where it's now silver.  any thoughts?

oh, and one last annecdote.  last night, my buddy got his new cbr600 running and we were riding around a bit--me on his and him on mine.  we stoped for some "paperclip repairs" to the cbr600 and a guy asked if we needed help.  after we told him we were fine, he looked at my friend and said,
"hey, i like your bike."
"thanks, just bought it," he replied.
the continued, "yeah i love those old cafes."
"oh, that's his bike."

never been happier.

I think it looks great - the way a cafe should look - hand made.

looks great, how did you go about making the seat, i've been wanting to do something similar on my 400f.

for the seat pan, got any fiberglass skills?  if not, there's some on ebay that are molded from the original pan for around 150.

for the seat itself, i took foam and got the basic size and shape i wanted and lightly glued it to the pan.  drilled 4 holes on each side of the pan, wrapped it around the foam and used the original seat buttons to punch through.

when i redo it, i'll get the nice highdensity sandable foam so as to shape it a bit better.  also, the only problem i've run into is the cheap foam is compressing a bit and making the fabric a bit loose.  both issues should be sorted out.

I've had similar experiences when I'm out with my buddy and his $15,000 Ducati. Always makes me smile until he proceeds to leave me eating his dust.

right after it--i was still on his CBR--i took off down the street.  when we got to the light he asked if i was really pushing it.  when i replied no, he claimed that he was really struggling to keep up

right.

Looking good man. I think the mangled up license plate gives it character. :D

I freakin love the stripes on the top. The thin/thick combo is sweet.

Regarding the silver sides of the tank, and your buddy who says you should get rid of them. I like them, but I'd maybe make it a bit smaller and echo the lines of the thank a bit better.

I'd also get a fork brace on there, and maybe some gaiters to beef up the front end a bit. Looking a little spindly on the front at the moment.

Kick ass bike for a hack. :) Gives me hope for me. We need a thumbsup emoticon.

Jeff

Looks good, I was contemplating going with off set stripes like a duc.  I'll probably get around to it this winter.

when i first put it on, i took it for a test ride down to the bar my wife works at.  when i got there the plate was folded up underneath the seat, guess i really need new springs.

i was thinking the same about making the silver on the side smaller, thanks....as for following the lines better, more patience, less rushing, and smaller tape.

glad you like the stripes, that's what got me started with the whole shceme.
