Oil coming out of Torque Converter when running....
« on: August 25, 2014, 09:14:26 AM »
Hi guys, got my bike all assembled and running, and now i get oil coming from the torque converter.  I am trying to find out what the issue is.

In the picture attached, it is coming out of the cutaway area circled in red.

I am assuming I am in need of a new oil seal (item #10) from the link below.  Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Did you take the cover off to paint it? It's possible that it's a seal or maybe the gasket (notated in the drawing as #6.) That might make sense because in order for oil to come out of that vent, it would have to drip on the spinning converter and get whipped out the hole.

One other thing to check is the little O rings that go over the slip tubes at the bottom of that cover. I took my cover off to polish it and didn't see that one of the o rings had fallen out and had an oil leak as a result.

Yes, i took it off as well.  Thanks Mr Freeze.  Just ordered the seal and the o-rings, i can just make that gasket if for some reason that one became damaged.

Well...

I did the replacement of the Oil Seal as well as the 2 O-rings and it still leaks!  Any other ideas?  Is it possible that I damaged the oil seal while getting it into place?  I guess the direction could be an issue as well - does the side with the spring face the motor or outwards?

Thanks again for your help!

On that type of seal, the spring side always faces the side of the fluid you are trying to contain.

Thanks scottly!  So correct me if I'm wrong here:

Oil comes through the shaft the oil seal is on, shoots around in the cover and goes back through the shaft.  Meaning I would want the spring facing away from the motor.

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with the oil flow through the 750A converter; just relaying what I learned about seals in mechanics 101. ;)

The converter is a two piece shell that is held together with 10 bolts, 10mm, torqued to 10-11 ft. lbs. There is a seal between the two halves. Could someone have peeked inside it at some time and not torque it back together? Just another area to look into...

Nope, unless they were really curious and fast workers.  Thank you for the idea though!
