Just a joke, Cakey. Follow Dave's advice (as you've planned to) and you be right as rain.

Totally no offence taken mate. I do know your right though but my first chain I'm keen just to use the clip link in case I need to alter later. Too cool.

I riveted all my jr dragster chains but so far use clips on my bikes. Some of the jr's were chain throwing monsters.

OT: There was a recent thread where an X ring chain was rubbing the cases of a CB750 around the final drive sprocket. We compared and the XRing chain was wider than my ORing chain, which clears my cases easily.

PS: I use a clip link with a single wrap (not 3 wraps) of safety wire. Properly installed, safety wire is generally accepted safety procedure. Often required at road race tracks.

I was worried about the width when I first started looking for chains because I had read previously that some chains had rubbed on cases. I don't know about other brands but in the EK range the o and x ring chains are the same width at 9.53 mm each.

Two words to solve all this: Rivet Link.
Yeah I know it would but it's not something I want to pursue.
9.53mm? Do you mean 9.53"?  My Regina is 9.79" (24.87mm). The chain that was rubbing was wider still. Brand = RK

MCr - your chain is 9" wide? Is that chain from a bulldozer? The links in these chains is about 9-10MM from outside link face to the inside link face. Any wider and it would not fit along the case.

Perhaps your thinking top to bottom between the over and under run, essentially sprocket diameter of rear wheel?

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Jeez, where did that come from? I slipped and jerked.  Thanks for the catch. But its .98" at its full width of a pin. I wasn't thinking anything else, just a goof.

But wouldn't it be the pin top that would be carving into the cases, not the link face? However you measure it.  So you'd want to compare at the pin, of a chain that fits and one that doesn't. I haven't really seen one other than pictures (one that has been rubbing) so I assumed the widest point.
