'76 550F Windshield
« on: August 29, 2014, 05:34:08 PM »
I'm considering a windshield for my '76 550F.  A nice, simple, windshield.  Does anyone have one they are happy with and can they give me the manufacturer and model?

Thanks.
Mark

I am in similar situation, did you check F-16 from National Cycle?  I searched high and low and read some good testimonies - no personnal experience.

this simpel handel mounted windshields..have some negative influence on steering going over the ton.

..have one at my cbx..but the steering got "loose" at speed..over 160 kmt...took it off..and nov the bike are stabil to+ 185 kmt..and more..the frame mounted are more stabil...but are you run at moderat speeds the littel shield are fine

mine schield have metal sidemounts..to muont it dovn at the  fork tubes..so it vas stabil and did not vibrate. not like the low preise in the links..think they are to unstabile

It depends on your size too and riding posture, good sized windshield should send the air over your head or at minimum to the top of your helmet.

I would love Vesco Transit, but they only show on ebay on the west coast.

Years ago I put National Cycle Plexistar 2 windshield on a 77CB550F I used primarily for commuting. (See avatar.)
They have changed all the marketing names of their offerings since then.  It looks like the closest thing they now have is the Plexifairing GT.
Mine mounts on both the bar and the front forks, which might be a problem for the 76, as they had accordion boots over the uppers where it is best mounted.
On my 76, I used a frame mount Vetter Quicksilver.   I prefer the frame mounted types for longer rides.   But, would much rather have a bar mount type than nothing, particularly when speeds get up over 40-50MPH.

Much depends on where your bars are mounted and if the bike has been modified to have "cafe" bars.  If such style is your forte, I think you will just have to suffer for your art.

On my '72 CB500 I've got a Slipstreamer Spitfire, recommended elsewhere on the forums. It looks pretty good, but it's a little short and sends air right into my face. I'd get something a few inches higher next time if you want it to be actually useful.

Great information, thanks guys.  My bike has not been modified from the original look.

I am 6'4" so I think I will look for something tall.  Most of my riding is done below 50mph.

Don't go too tall.  You should be able to see the road/traffic over the top of the shield, so you won't be blinded by rain or mud splashes.  The air will still sail over your head with a shield below eye level.
