Carb question
« on: August 31, 2014, 06:12:12 AM »
So heres a photo of the choke shield, not sure what its actually called, on my #4 carb. Just got this bike about 6 months ago and have been doing some cleaning, maintenance, and other changes. So took the carbs off for a sonic cleaning and im now reassembling the bike. I find a piece of the choke shield missing. Im assuming that it might cause some issues getting the bike started, but shouldnt affect the running of the bike. Am i correct?

I know that it might be a bigger issue if it broke off and went int the engine, but the bike was runnung fine when i got it, and i checked the oil, no metal shavings.

Am i good to throw the bike back together? Or do i need to look into replacing  the one carb now? Long term ill be grabbing a CR29, but i want to wait till next winter  when i do a full tear down.

Somebody on this board should have one of those flaps. JMO, I'd replace the flap and call it good. Never saw one break like that. Maybe cracked and could break more?
Would only affect cold starting I'd think. But wouldn't want to chance any more metal inside the engine....again, JMHO..

It's not a big deal.  It probably won't even really affect cold starts, as it's a small chip and the others are assumed fully intact.

It's also an easy fix, but the carbs do need to be off the bike.

If you plan on just getting different carbs anyways I wouldn't really worry about it.  I would say it's perhaps more likely that it broke while someone was messing with the carbs rather than during operation on the bike.

Yes sir the other three are fully intact. I poked at the chipped one and it felt strong, didn't  feel anything loose or like something would come off.

How the hell could that part break on the bike, its just air rushing in.

It broke when someone probably working on the floor stepped on it.
Build a bench people. Stop working down on the floor.
