Another EMGO switch thread

I know there's threads here about these crappy aftermarket switches but I have a specific question.

I installed a higher draw headlight as well Hondamans relay switch so I wouldn't melt my hi-lo-off switch. Everything seemed to work great

About 1,000 miles later I noticed. My key was getting a little stuck in the ignition switch. I pulled it off and noticed it was a little white and cruddy in there. This switch was installed by the PO without Hondamans relay. I'm wondering if the new headlight could have affected this or was the 8,000 miles or so I put on this switch caused the failure.

Am I at a point of no return and should just get a new switch and HM relay or could this be cleaned?
I know not the greatest photo.

Bike is a 72 cb750 so it is a frame mounted switch.

Maybe lubrication is the problem/solution?
The common switch problem is usually melted wires/electrical connection points made for half of actual current. Problems here seems to be the locking device, mechanical.

I should clean it inside with a spray for cylinder lock, then high pressure air to clean it. Last proper spray lubricate with graphite spray for cylinder locks.  Blow clean after frequent use of the key for some cycles,

Thanks pewe, I'll check this out now. Yeah I was a bit confused as to what I was seeing. I pulled it off and the wires seemed to be completely fine.

My guess was some sort of water corrosion. I got caught in a torrential downpour yesterday and ended up having to ride through a few puddles up to my pegs. Felt like I was on a jetski!

I just killed one of these emgo switches off on my f3.  When I saw the problem, I realized I was very lucky to have made it home.  Take a peek at the back, where the wires are soldered on.  Make sure the connections are not burned or melting.
If it works good, it looks good...

I have a question..Is the plug in that switch round or square?.. I just got a 1972 and the switch was cut off..

I just killed one of these emgo switches off on my f3.  When I saw the problem, I realized I was very lucky to have made it home.  Take a peek at the back, where the wires are soldered on.  Make sure the connections are not burned or melting.

Yeah I checked the back where the wires are soldered on and everything seemed completely good. I've put about 7-8k miles on it. My guess NOW, is just all the water that I dealt with this weekend. I sprayed it with air and put a little oil on my key and it seems good to go.

sounds good, mine only lasted 2-3000 miles, put it on earlier this summer.  I am pretty sure the f3 routes headlight voltage through this  ignition switch and that is what killed it, whereas with the k2, headlight voltage only goes through the on/off switch.
If it works good, it looks good...

thanks I got it right then.... I just ordered one and a new wiring harness for my bike.. an its round also..

Yeah and I installed Hondamans relay switch to save my low high off switch. I guess we'll see how long it lasts and where I eventually get stranded!

 I haven't installed the relay yet but with the new harness I ran a hot wire from the spade type fuse block into the headlight bucket. I don't think this wire has to be switched through the key, only the low amp switch leg to the relay. Wouldn't doing it my way reduce the load on the key switch and the stock harness?
