Yes... I got a Kaw Z 900 also
« on: August 31, 2014, 10:21:14 PM »
Looks like after I get some tips and parts advice from Steve him and I will be riding off into the sunset on our matching 75 Kaw 900's and leave this SOHC scene behind for once and all  ;D
Bought this one this weekend from a very interesting and cool person. He is a comedy writer for a fairly known comedian and is tied into that business in some other capacities. Has an interesting mix of antiques, old cars, trucks and camper and enjoyed our meeting.
This bike was owned by him for over 24 years and has good bones. Not on the road since 2004. Think this will be a fun long term keeper and hope to bring it back to all its glory someday. Its got 24,000 on the speedo and 'ran when parked' OH OH  :D Has the original seat but darn not the pipes. Silver paint makes it faster  :P
Now if I can find an original paint 73 with stock pipes I would be happy. Maybe someday  ;)

Way to go on the Z1 Eric ;D So where was the bike at. Was it listed on CL or Ebay or did you just happen to be at the right place right time when you stumbled across it from this comedy writer.
The Z1, GS1100, and the CBX are three bike's that are on my bucket list ;)

He was taking offers on Craigslist and had to leave to go back east on Sunday so add was up for about a day. After getting many low ball offers, a couple better ones, wacky trade ideas etc we talked and made an agreement and he said come up and get it and save him from all that stuff. Was about 90 miles north of me in a nice little part of the state so wife enjoyed the ride.

I have  few of those 'dark side' projects around right now. My ace in the hole is that my shop buddy and good friend has had, and or still has, his 1974 Z1 for over 34 years and knows his way around them pretty well. Think he may hopefully be anxious to dig in on it.

Not to worry, DHall, I am here.  Congrats Eric, I am actually surprised it took you this long to get one.

Original stock pipes will be next to impossible to find in good cond, I suggest you sell (GASP!) one of your lesser liked bikes and buy a set of repops like I did.

I will probably be asking you about paint, pipes etc sometime Steve in the near future after I get it up and running and make sure all is good mechanically. Have ran it on a bottle so far without even cleaning carbs yet but those are coming off as do all new bikes I get that have sat for a long time.
Funny story about the pipes though. I found a set of 4 stockers with baffles along with some other stuff in a storage trailer at a car repair and junk yard. Stopped in once in awhile but the old guy never gave me a price. Roll in one winter day a couple/few years ago with my buddy who has had his 74 900 for over 34 years and he says go dig out the stuff and I will look. Lay out the pipes in the snow and he says "How bout 50 bucks" Pay for those and some other goodies and I tell my friend he can use them on his bike. I am not an Indian giver so they are his but it will be hard to find another set I am sure without going to new. At least I can look at them since he stores his Kaw in my shop  ;D  ;D  New junk to hunt for though, I do like a challenge  ;)

Me too!  Mine is a 1976

I haven't posted to the SOHC board much lately because I sold my CB550F a few years ago.  Mostly into KZ's and two strokes these days.  Still someday I hope to pickup a CB400F because I had one back in 1980, with a Yoshimura 458cc big bore, cam and a Kerker.  It was a long time ago buy my recollection is that the bike was very fast!

Technically not a Z1 but looks great, Mike.  Bet it sounds wicked with that MotoGp pipe on there.

You could easily sell that Glide and buy a Z to reduce your fever!

I think that is the color combo  I would eventually like to do also Steve. Found evidence of blue being its original color. Should probably buy some repop pipes and stash them away while still easily available and before an inevitable price increase someday also. Just recently removed the carbs for a good cleaning and she should be ready for some shakedown runs. Everything is checking out well so far, all electrics good and ran it on slave tank before the carbs came off.

The Z1B's (1975) came in two colors, Candy Super Blue and Candy Super Red, it was a tough design for me, both are great colors. Look...

The repop pipes are made in Japan by the Doremi company, the quality is A+ and were easily installed. I got them from Z1parts.net for $1250 shipped and came with everything needed except the 6mm washers and nuts for the flanges.  Highly recommended.

Hmm- that red does look good also. What to do, the color it was born with or that Purdy 'resale' red.
