Patina Hyena - '78 CB550/'82 CB650 674cc Hybrid Cafe Build

In FunJimmy's and Franky's post for the R6 swap, they make no space for a rubber seal for the wheel bearings. I know these bearings are sealed, but is that enough? New bikes have seals as well as sealed bearings. Redundant?

Most bathroom scales are designed to weigh up to around 300 pounds.  So, it is possible your small contact patch and being in the upper range of the scale capacity is responsible for your dents...  your feet will distribute the weight over a much greater area.

I just measured my bike's weight. 355lbs wet. Went to a transfer station and used the truck scale. Manual lists the weight as about 438lbs wet. Not too bad.

Just spoke to my buddy about his 550 with the EX500 motor.  Wet weight was 325 lbs.  He said to be wary of truck scales because they have an error factor of about 50 lbs.  He suggested using two scales (one for each wheel).  STILL -- it sounds like you got yours down to a good weight.

I used two bathroom scales but they must have bee super cheap because the wheels dented the middle and prevented the scale from actually moving. I'm not about to go buy more scales for this.

I weighed my bike and me a 540 lbs. I just weighed the bike at 380. So that means that the scale thinks I'm 160 lbs. I'm actually 135 lbs because I'm a tiny sickly human. So that means the scale is 25 lbs over. Subtract 25 from 380 and you get 355. That's close enough for me!

Yeah, that's my conclusion too. It's like if you stood on the scale while on one stilt. When I lowered the bike on the scales they both read like 80lbs, haha. Not going to work for me unless I'm really good at reducing weight off bikes.

Stilleto heels have something crazy while an average female is walking in them they exert close to 1500-1600 pounds of force on that tiny heel contact spot when walking.

Kind of starting the R6 fork swap...kind of. Thanks Cal! Hub just fits, haha. Turns true and I'm getting great chips. This machining might not be so involved to do myself.

This is just a preliminary test. Still need to get aluminum for the spacers and a new chuck to be able to grab on the OD of large diameter stock. My little chuck don't expand that much nor does it have reversible jaws.

Then it's measuring measuring measuring and using Franky's and FunJimmy's posts for reference.

Thanks Cal, I'll give them a call. I was planning on a Shars or one from LittleMachineShop.com. But if they have what I want for cheaper, then I'll be happy.

Oh, and my cross slide can't reach into the hub, haha. Maybe I can move things around to be able to reach in there, but I'll have to go back out with the lathe and I'm already inside drinking whiskey. If there's a way, I'll figure it out.

Well if you can't and want it done, ship it back down. I'll turn it and face the lips for you then ship it back up. I've probably also got some 6061 tube blanks for your axle spacers. Who knew... Could have done/shipped all that up at once  :-\

Eh, no worries. It's not imperative it gets done. Just an aesthetic thing and I don't even think it'll look that bad. I'll either glass blast it myself or just brighten it all up with some scotchbrite while in the lathe.

Funny though, after chucking it in my lathe and making sure it runs true it shows that the center part with the fins isn't at all true. Maybe it's obvious but it must have not been turned that way but cast so there's no accuracy. I just thought that was interesting.

Delighted to see that my detailed drawings and images are being put to good use! I promise you, that you'll love that stopping power - a completely different world.

Also exited to work with you, Dave, to improve the drawings, add imperial numbers and what not.

A 4 jaw chuck would probably be the way to go if you're planning to get another chuck for the lathe.  Even the cheap ones can be more accurate than a standard 3 jaw, and a lot cheaper.  CDCO Machinery has some inexpensive stuff, but I've had good luck buying from Shars, too.  I'm liking the fork swap.  Might look into something like this for my next project.

Yeah, I was looking into 4 jaw chucks too. I'm not sure which one I'll get. I'll turn into Abom79...he's a master at dialing in work on a 4 jaw chuck. Takes him about 30 seconds to get half a thou.

Ended up buying a 3 jaw from little machine shop. But Shars sells a 4" 4 jaw for like $60. With an adapter plate it'll cost less than $100. That's cheap. I'll be buying one later on.

And Cal, I called the place you linked to a few times and left a message. No return call and I couldn't wait. Thanks for the link anyway.

The 3 jaw is self centering....4 or 6 are for that offset work which I don't think you need right now.

For accuracy, you get what you pay for with 3 and 6 jaw chucks.  In addition to offset work, a four jaw is cheap and will to center your work down to whatever your indicator will read.

I also really like mrpete222 aka tubalcain.  He has a good lesson about adding a new chuck to a small Craftsman and how to prep the backing plate:

I've watched that video a couple times in prep for the new chuck :) . I've been subscribed to him for a while now, love his videos. I love when he's making a video and his wife calls down to him and he yells back, "I'm on the air!" haha

My Craftsman lathe is a 12x36.  I think I could do all the machining anyone is calling for on it, but have access to some much bigger lathes if needed.  Good because I'm liking the idea of a front end swap for the bare frame I picked up.  I also like the idea of a 650 swap, but only if one falls out of the sky..
