If you scroll up to the post #2330 there’s a write up on what I bought and how I fit it. No need for the 650 spark units (The 650 actually uses a transistorized ignition, not a CDI.) And can’t use the Dyna S plate, I made my own.

Pretty much just wire it up pretending you’ve got a 750. Plate wired directly to coils as it says in the Dyna directions.

Done with ignition. 36.5° total advance and it pulls great. Idle setting is about 8° and I think it’s more stable. I’ll have to test some more of course. Always testing.

Almost 68hp and that’s with this new DynoJet software which I’m told is not generous at all. Rick’s up in Mass would probably show between 70-75hp. I’m happy and I think the bike is done for now!!! There’s always the rear disk conversion though.

I wonder if you kept the original ignition, the factory one, if there would be a notable difference in power.

I'm really contemplating putting back the stock ignition and remove the C5.
Before I had the DC-DC converter I had a coil malfunction and destroyed.
After installing the DC-DC converter I discovered that with 3 sparks the bike wasn't going into high revs.
With one or two sparks it got to redline. I changed my curves to get the three sparks closer together and went for a testride. Came back home on two cilinders because of antoher coil malfunction. Replaced it with the last spare I had. Put back curves with only one spark. Up to now I get the best results with one spark. With that in mind I don't see any advantages other than to be able to switch between advance curves.
In the coming weeks I'm gonna put back the stock ignition and coils. I don't want any more drama and just enjoy riding without having doubts if I'm getting home one 4 or 2 cilinders.

I wonder too, no idea. My original ignition was shot. This 650 I got was left in the rain and sun with the entire harness exposed for at least 6 years. All block connectors turned to dust. If I were you, I’d give it a try. If you remember I also had high rev issues with the C5 and the dc/dc converter. At the dyno it was breaking up around 9k rpm I think. Bypassing the converter it ran nice and strong to almost 10k.

If you’re curious about the Dyna S, I’m thinking of making some kits to make the 550/750 version fit on our bikes. I might be making a some for some members soon, if you’re interested.

I will keep it in my mind, your kit for the Dyna S. Although I would be able to manage the mods myself. In a couple of weeks I’ll replace the C5 with the stock unit. I’ll report back on it.

If you don't want to go the full Monty with a Cognito rear hub, you could always replace the rear wheel with a 1975-76 CB750F hub and disc.

Hi Dave, last week I took of the C5 ignition and placed the original on the bike. Cold start and the road no difference.
Maybe on a dyno there would be a difference, but road feel is the same.
I’ll keep the reliable stock ignition for now. I have spare coils and ignitors (CDI units).

I thought I’ll let you know.

Something else I’m working on is one little aesthetic issue I have with the bike. The top triple is too tall compared to the tank and I want to lower it. I can machine the triple and top of the steering stem so it sits much lower but then the forks will be sticking out the top which I also don’t want. I’ve been researching lowering forks internally by cutting the springs. Emailed RaceTech and I could buy all the parts but I could save a few hundred dollars by doing it myself. I just don’t really understand what needs to be done. Remember, I have 2003-2004 Yamaha R6 forks. They’re conventional forks so they’re easier to mod than upside down forks.

Anyone have any knowledge on this kind of modification they’d like to share?

Spring 2020 updates! Thanks to Covid-19 I have a lot of time to work on the bike now. My last post was about questions on shortening the forks and I got that done as well as lowering the top triple about 1” so it sits more flush with the line of the tank. Much better appearance in my opinion.

The Cognito top and bottom triples are great, but they are thick and the top triple doesn’t have a counterbore or “pocket” on the hole of the steering stem so it just sits on top of the bearing preload nuts. Doesn’t make for a clean install in my opinion. At least for my ‘03-‘04 R6 forks.




I called a small local machine shop and they milled out a counterbore to my dimensions in about an hour. Also bought an M28 x 1.0 thread cutting die to increase the amount of threads on the steering stem. Put it in my old pipe threading die wrench and it worked like a charm. This worked out nicely and it sits a hair shy of flush with the top of the frame.






Lowering the forks took some research just on how to do it. But, once I saw how, it was extremely easy. Turned up some lowering spacers on my lathe out of UHMW of the amount I want the bike lowered (.750”). I heard that’s a good plastic for this which is highly impact resistant (doesn’t need to be) and has excellent chemical resistance, especially to hydraulic oils. Also reduced the length of the stock spacers by .750” and things went together easy and lowered the forks perfectly.

To lower the forks I added the small UHMW spacers to the fork at about the 25” mark on the cutting mat. Between the small spring and the spring stop. Then also shortened the length of the large spacers to the far left the same amount.

Also, when removing the forks I slipped in PVC pipe to keep the handlebars and headlight in place, worked great. I was please with myself, haha.

Because I’m so small and frail the stock R6 forks, even with the preload adjusters all the way out for it’s minimal stiffness, were still way too stiff. I felt it on the road and the measurements confirmed it. I bought some used RaceTech .80 kg/mm springs on eBay for under $17 which still measured out well within spec. Threw those in and it’s a lot better. I still have to have the preload adjusters at it’s lightest setting but now it’s adjusted as it should be. Haven’t ridden yet to confirm the performance but that will happen soon.
